I don't think the Japanese are famous for it, though you did think of Sake. ;)
Hockey wrote:Ever tried Sake?
I've had many, from simple and fairly cheap, to smooth and expensive.
Hockey wrote:is it seriously snakes blood? Not sure if I could stomach that...
It's a rice alcohol, like Daedalus said.
Hockey wrote:I've heard you halucinate...for a short period of time... :P
Maybe on really bad Sake, but I have yet to do so. Absynthe is more likely to cause halucinations.
Hockey wrote:There is another hard booze...Absynthe(sp??) which is your drink the booze while being filtered by a sugar cube, supposedly you just go right bonkers for a good 10-15 minutes...
filtered through sugar can make it nicer for some, I've yet to try it. I have seen it run through burning sugar too.
Actually it's the burning of the sugar supposedly, according to a bar tender friend of mine I just asked, that gives it that WHOA effect...

Not sure I can swallow all that sweetness in an alchoholic drink :P

Absynthe is nasty, it is a poison. You have to build up a tolerance before you can drink enough to feel the effects. It's nasty. The sugar helps mask the horrible taste.

Guinness is the best of the best, hands down.

favorite that i can afford: Saku which is just an estonian beer. I don't like american/canadian beers too much.

Oh, is that why???

Interesting...

I don't plan on drinking it myself as most poisons make you trip out...

I tried magic mushrooms once...and that feeling of complete loss of control...scared the jesus out of me...

I like having full situational awareness...I almost called 911 on myself...so I swore I'd never do that again... :P more importantly I haven't... :)

What part of poison, do people not understand??? I was such a naive young adult... :P

Kokanee is an alright beer, I must say...it's gross still but tastes the best...

As for Molson Canadian...OMG that's gross beer...really bad tasting...

There are small breweries like Sleemans, Alexander Keiths and Fort Garry which are more favoured when people come here from abroad, but likley to small to export...especially fort garry...

They all give me a headache in the morning, so whats the difference really??? :P

Beer is the most popular alcoholic beverage on earth. It is made in almost every culture. Among the traditional beverages (pre-soft drink) it is the second most popular drink -- after water.

Good thread.

Newcastle Brown, by far my beverage of choice. Followed in no specific order by Guinness, Sam Adams Boston Lager or one of their other offerings. I had an excellent red ale from Coronado Brewing Company during a stay at Coronado (across the bay from San Diego, CA; I highly recommend a weekend there if you can manage it). I will generally go for a dark ale or lager over a 'generic beer', but I don't mind Bud Light or Corona especially if it accompanies a shot or 3 of tequila.

I've had a couple of different Japanese beers, Kirin and Asahi; of the two I prefer Kirin (or at least I used to). It may sound crazy, but as popular as it is (and as many drinks as I've put down) I've yet to try Heinekin.

Tim is one lucky fellow to live in Belgium. Our southern neighbours have the best beers in the world! That's not just my opinion, that's a fact :)

Duvel is very good, but be careful not to drink too many of them (it's all in the name.. hehe). I also like Leffe, very good stuff.

You shouldn't forget that czech beer is the best there is!
Two years ago, we had a Canadian guy here for a year. At first he didn't like drinking at all and when he was leaving, he wanted to start a czech pub in Canada just to have good beer there ;)

Budweiser Budvar (the czech one, not the US copy)
Pilsner Urquell
Krusovice
Staropramen
... there are many others but I don't think you could know any of the others

But really, most of the beers here are very good. And there are many smaller breweries where you can get really awesome beers!

Dang Hockey, that was a massive string of consectutive posts! 8O

As for me, I like Guiness Draught. In fact, it is the only beer I can get past my taste buds because it tastes like cold coffee. Everything else tastes like beer and I can't handle that.

As for hard liquor, I haven't touched it in over ten years (almost the same for beer, to be honest), but when I did dabble in the boozin, I could only drink Jose Curevo Gold tequila straight from the bottle. Not girlie drinks, no fruit juices or colorizing. And certainly not any other hard liquor. Just good old fashioned 'self destruction in a bottle'.

It has been so long since I actually drank anything hard though. If I did, I'd probably puke. Now, throw down a nice 2002 Whitehall Lane Cabernet, a 2001 Concannon Cabernet or any of the other no-so-sweet Cabs, and we can have a really nice time.
