Whats cool in your city?

Post by alex.barylski »

Sorry, I promise, last general topic I start today...anyways, in my last message, I made a comment about 7-11, which made me wonder if the marketing babble they push on my city was true...they have claimed we are the Slurpee capital of the world...well they weren't lying, were on the trivia list on their web site:

http://www.7-eleven.com/newsroom/funfacts.asp

Point 15, Winnipeg Manitoba Canada... :P

I contribute to that number :)

So I figured I'd list other neat little facts about my home town...

1) Winnie The Pooh is a Winnipeg'er
2) James Bond is sort of a Winnipeg'er (http://commanderbond.net/article/2399)
3) Terry Fox, was Born and lived in Winnipeg
4) Childhood entertainer Fred Penner and rock legend Neil Young (although Neil isn't born in Winnipeg) are from Winnipeg and attended the same high school
5) Winnipeg I believe was the first city in North America to adopt the 911 call number
6) We have the first and possibly only U-Turn signal in the world
7) We have been the murder capital of Canada on and off for many years now
8) We are located almost exactly dead center of North America and are short hop from the actual longitudinal center of north america.
9) There is a city sign which states we are the XMAS capital of Canada, not sure how you measure that, but hey...it's cool
10) Mosquitoes so large, they oculd carry a small child away :P

I have heard this many times locally but cannot find actual statistics...but Winnipeg has the highest population of Filipino's than anywhere outside of the Philipenes...again not sure of it's accruacy, but as a child half my friends were filipino...so that says something

Here is a Wikipedia on Winnipeg...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnipeg

I'd like to hear interesting little facts like this about your cities...although I would prefer not hearing about massive cities with millions of people...

Try and find a smaller city close by or something...Winnipeg doesn't have more than 700,000 people, so were pretty small...

It took me longer to drive out of DFW airport perimeter than it does for me to drive through the city of Winnipeg *lol*

It saddens me so many youth want to move from Winnipeg, as it's IMHO a pretty cool little town with tons of interesting history, real mover's and shaker's and tons of life...just gotta know where to find it all :)

Anyways, yea, gimme some cool facts about your city...not just the Wikipedia...

I love this kind of stuff...

Cheers :)

1. Beer (I don't drink.)
2. Brautwurst and Kraut (I eat.)
3. GreenBay Packers (Close enough.)
4. The Mall ?!?! (Never go) :P
5. 1960's America in 2006

And that's pretty much it.

I've heard of the place, in fact I thnk I may have family there...but the Wiki says largest traditional county in England, not Europe?? :?

I'm not sure I know what that means...

A county is not a city I don't imagine...besides I would figure London would probably win there...

It's not also the hometown of any famous brit bands is it?

Beetles, Monkeys, Turtles, Iguana's, anything??? :P

Really? What do you mean by that? Fast food resturants still have bell hops?? :P

I wonder if that's why the 70's show was based in Wisconsin? I wonder if it was filmed in Wisconsin???

Isn't Harley Davidson a Wisconsin company? Not sure where in Wisconsin...

Just checked, it's Milwaukee :P

I kind of meant things uniquely to your city...not just special to your city...

Winnipeger's are big beer drinkers too and we at one time had about 5 breweries in the city...but they packed up and went East...

Are mosquitoes could carry away small children, but i'm sure that's not *unique* to Winnipeg, basically anywhere it's wet occasionally and hot a and humid others...you'll find Teradactyl's I mean...mosquiotes.... :P

where I am now (Phoenix) I know nothing about.

actually my hometown (Ogden, Utah) I know very little about, but here are a few facts I know off the top of my head:

one of the peaks there (Bonneville) was the inspiration for paramount pictures' logo.
the hifi murders took place there sometime in the 70's.
the 2002 Olympic downhill and super-G events were held there.
there's some TV show that is filmed there regularly (no idea what it's called or what it's about :S )
promitory point (where the intercontinental railroad was first joined) is right near by

One of my best friends just moved to Phoenix, I'll be flying out there before winter to hang for a week or two.

Senator Joesph McCarthy was from Appleton. Other than that I can't think of a single unique thing.

As far as it being the 1960's, my neighborhood is circa 1960 and people socially still get out and chat and hangout with the neighbors more than any place I've ever lived.

Which for me is unique. I grew up in very large urban centers like Indianapolis and Chicago.

Sorry should have quoted the Wiki page. I live in Huddersfield which is a town within West Yorkshire. Huddersfield town being the largest town in Europe.
Famous people from Huddersfield. Well outside of the UK the only one I can think of is Harold Wilson but I may be wrong http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page129.asp. Nothing as exciting as the Beatles :) Mel B from the Spice Girls was born in Leeds which is our nearest city. Think I'm scraping the barrel now
