I hate computers

Seriously, this is stupid.

I buy a laptop with windows on it. It works but then you have to buy a anti-virus, firewall, yada yada. It's hard to get server stuff working and is a pain because it crashes often. I have no money and no time for crap like that so no, not for me.

I think 'Linux is they key!'. Negative. I tried Fedora Core, nothing worked. Then I tried Ubuntu...worked for a while but died. Wireless was 'hacked' into getting to work, then recently failed miserably. My usb mouse works maybe half the tme. iPod's on linux are a joke. I never could get my screen resolution set properly. I installed phpmyadmin and it broke my php5 installation and I had to get a linux admin to fix it. 5 minute boot time? "Linux is Ready for the desktop now!" Laff.

I then think 'ok maybe ill just run windows on my laptop again since things work'. stupid idea since I am afraid to even update my computer because of this piracy program that does not work. 4 fresh LEGAL installs of windows at work and EVERY ONE OF THEM was flagged as being illigal. They where brand new cd's!

Now (on windows) even as I type this my usb mouse was disconnected (it hasn't moved an inch).....I have to restart my computer to get my mouse to work again. Windows has crashed 3 times since i re-installed it yesterday. I have no anti-virus installed (i am reminded of this every freakin 5 minutes). Those are just the beginning of my problems on this OS.

Is there nothing out there that freakin works!? I don't want to go though 6865765 linux distros to find one that actually works properly. I don't want to buy anything windows because it does not work, tried and tested failure of a OS. I think it's moronic that I have to buy a specific mac computer to run mac software. I like my hardware, I like building my own computer, Why the hardware lock-in?

There is not a single solid OS out there right now that fits your every-day mans needs. I don't have the money to buy a mac so I need something that works on my computer that I already have. It is very sad that this does not exist.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (apparently while typing that scream I changed the color of certain characters. Green !, purple H....)

*sigh*

Linux wireless card support is very spotty. That's precisely what's stopping me from making the switch (aside from retraining issues).

Welcome to poweruserland.

Yeah wireless for Linux sucks. I tried a year or more ago to buy a laptop for the purpose of installing linux on it. I bought an Acer I though would work but I never did get wireless on it. Now it just straight windows. I'd reccomend that anyone whose buying a laptop for Linux do some good research before making the purchase.

I brought home this old POS computer from work, put Linux Kubuntu on it and I'm happy as a lark. It's my primary machine. But I don't have big demands for Ipods, games or other peripherals. Although my HP 1220 Ink Jet has worked on every Linux distro I've tried thus far. And my digital camera mounts well too.

I briefly tried SUSE before my machine died of a hardware issue. It seem to pick up my wireless no problem. You may want to give that a go.

Or you may have had a well supported wireless card.

Sounds all soo familiar! In between troubles I can use my computer well.

I don't know Linux and just started with OSX so I can't say much about those. But for Windows.. the problem is feature overload. They have like 45.000 employees working on the OS. Always adding stuff. Seems like Vista is going to be tenfold bigger then XP. New features, new possibilities, new graphic b**sh**t.

.. new problems..

They should be removing stuff with each new version! Instead of telling "685 new features added in Vista" it should be "we removed 700 useless features, removed 1898 bugs and 378 problems".

If you want to get really rich: I would suggest you design a very basic computer with a very simple operating system that just works. No fancy stuff. Just very basic. Internet, email, text-processing. No difficult stuff. No crashes. No problems. 80% of the current computer owners would switch to your system! Including my parents and all other family members who keep calling to help with their pc trouble.

Shiz, it sounds like you have the black angel of death sitting next to you pushing buttons for you 8O . Sorry to hear about all those problems. I have never had a problem with Windows (mostly, spare one stupid IE incident that fried my hard drive). I ran ME for a while with only a few Blue Screend of Death. I then moved into Win2K with no problems. I am on WinXP Pro SP2 and have only a few, nuisance type issues (like my laptop screen brightnes settings not staying set), but I was able to get IIS and Apache running, .NET 2 and PHP running, MSDE Express and MySQL running and all my USB stuff going like gangbusters.

When I rebuilt my old laptop to a Linux machine (Fedora Core 4) I had no problems other than my wireless network did not work with it. I found in my research that Wireless network in Linux is a pain in the donkey and, under penalty of insanity, should never be attempted. But I have never heard of a single user having some many problems as you are having with this. I really feel for you bro.

Well this has always existed for me. From my motherboard literally catching fire, to my sister dropping an earing on the replacement montherboard and frying it, to my 2nd replacement mobo not working at all... and that was just 1 piece of hardware.

people will be like 'your computers not working!!!' when they try to turn my desktop comp on (which yes, requires a screwdriver to boot up) it's because they moved it a few inches which my computer does not enjoy. just move it back to its original position on my desk and it works.

the list goes on.

i often question my choice of going into the computer field, if you have this much bad luck it has to be some sort of sign :P. At least it's not boring :).

Your motherboard caught on fire?

You just got some bad luck. I have been on the same XP install for years and it has yet to crash and that is with some major hardware upgrades during that time.

Just trying to access a FTP using EditPlus and use Firefox to browse the web. Maybe some music in the background.

Computers hate me. Back when I had a case for my desktop computer it hated the case so much that 50% of the time when I tried to reboot it, it would die. I would have to remove the side of the case, start it up, then *very slowly* put the side of the case back on. If I put the side on too quickly, everything would lock up to the point of not even booting up and I would have to give it 5 minutes without the case's side on before I tried again. I no longer have a case for it but if you move it an inch it will scream at you and die until it goes back to its little spot.

---these are just my hardware problems!

my software problems are much more extensive. since i reisntalled windows on my laptop I have not been able to restart the computer normally as every time i try to restart it, it locks up and dies. I have to do a hard restart and that only works half the time.

Nothing works 100%, ever. I have had more problems with windows xp than ubuntu though. Fedora Core gave me more problems then anything. My laptop, which even has the 'Designed for Windows XP' sticker NEVER fully worked. Wether it be the scrolling on the touch-pad or the usb devices exploding, there has always been a problem.

Back before I knew what linux was, I had my windows XP cd key memorized by heart. I could be wasted drunk and still be like 'my windows cd key is...' that was how often I had to re-install windows because something did not work.

well no matter what, there needs to be a very good OS that 'just works' and I think its rediculous that one does not already exist. How many millions, possibly even billians, have been spent on research for OS's? They still can't come up with something decent? THIS IS NO LONGER ROCKET SCIENCE! Kids who are 15 can understand and help develope this stuff. I don't understand what the problem is.

*more sighs*

trust me, been there and have done that. Like I said, wireless did work and then stopped. It was still recognized and everything. I posted my question on the ubuntu forums with no answer. iPod's on linux are stupid too. That whole thing never worked. Thanks though.

Mac - I don't like the hardware lockin stuff. As far as I know, if I bought a brand new copy of OSX I could not run it on my dektop or laptop because of their hardware. Am I wrong?

BEOS - what?
