Hmm... that doesn't sound like a mere kiddy hack job. Did you reinstall the system?

That's the hosts' job... they said they took care of it. Basically the cracker replaced any files named index*.* with "by Thehacker". The host fixed the security exploit, then wrote a script that replaced index*.* files with the files from the backups. It didn't have anything to do with phpBB. I didn't notice that it affected everything else, though, because that particular site just has a phpBB forum on it and nothing else.

You know, I have found that some hackers target certain hosts. iPowerweb is one of them. I got porked a few times with them before I ditched them iPowerweb has the worst server security I have ever experienced and they are doing nothing to make it better.
I would guess some other popular hosts are targets too. Not sure why anyone would want to do this to people, but then again, nobody can really explain why idiots do what they do.

well most of us understand the difference but i can't think of a better word to use.
there are script kiddies
there are crackers
there are white/black hat hackers
either way the most annoying are the script kiddies and crackers (commercial use). hackers are a totally different breed

I've been burnt twice when I let phpbb boards I was running get behind on updates... phpBB is great just never let your updates lapse.
