It's not really the SF interface that is the problem. It's their server farm. It is severely overloaded. It can take forever for a page to load even with a high speed connection. Plus in some areas you get 500 errors where the server is unavailible. They fixed this problem for the web sites for each project but the main Sourceforge site is still doggy. And you know there are some load issues when the stats tracking goes down for weeks at a time or is behind for days.pedrotuga wrote:microsoft already created something similar...
in my opinion SF is getting delayed in a lot of points.... i think it's time for them to change to a more user friendly interface.
as for google service... dunno...

Now here is a silly thing...
Only people who have GMail accounts can create a new project on Google Code. If you don't have a GMail account you are screwed and locked out. Now how Open Source is that?
And the kicker is GMail is still classed as Beta so you have to have a friend who has GMail help you get one still.
They would have had far more projects sign up if it wasn't for this Microsoftian Membership requirement.

I listened to a webinar not to long ago about Open Source. The lead server/production guy from SF was on it as the first speaker. He was describing their server fiasco. Judging by what he said it sounds like they are buisy putting together a plan for a rebuild. Can't remember what site hosted the webinar.

This is there way of asking you to have an accout with them. Right now their turnaround time to offer you accounts based on your request is about two days. You can get a gmail account without an invite, I think, if oyu ask them for one.AKA Panama Jack wrote:Only people who have GMail accounts can create a new project on Google Code. The thing is I don't really want one and don't need one. I have one free email account that I have been using for years and years with 30 meg of storage and I never go over 1% usage.
Anyway it looks like they are going to mainly be publishing Open Source applications that work with any of the Google sites and not really general applications from the way everything reads. In other words it's not going to be an alternative to sites like Sourceforge.

What exactly are you reading? You can put anything up on google code, as long as it is licensed under 1 of the 6 available licenses they have available to choose from (gpl 1, gpl 2, bsd, etc...). It's also a subversion repository which I favor over cvs. Google has a lot of their own projects that have nothing to do with other google products. A few I've seen are a python framework, a template engine for C++, performance analyzing tools for c++ projects.. just to name a few.AKA Panama Jack wrote:Anyway it looks like they are going to mainly be publishing Open Source applications that work with any of the Google sites and not really general applications from the way everything reads.
