What exactly are you reading? You can put anything up on google code, as long as it is licensed under 1 of the 6 available licenses they have available to choose from (gpl 1, gpl 2, bsd, etc...). It's also a subversion repository which I favor over cvs. Google has a lot of their own projects that have nothing to do with other google products. A few I've seen are a python framework, a template engine for C++, performance analyzing tools for c++ projects.. just to name a few.
Read through the FAQ. :)

Only people who have GMail accounts can create a new project on Google Code. If you don't have a GMail account you are screwed and locked out. Now how Open Source is that?.
It's almost as if Google is into web advertising or data mining or something ... ;)

I heard about a book a while back, can't remember what it was called but thats besides the point.

The point of the book was that the world will be overrun and eventually destroyed by a extreamly large company that does horrible things but nobody notices and loves the company to death. Every time the company does something 'evil' the people would make it sound good and not evil.

It's awesome because this book was written before google and google seams to be just that. They can datamine everything, know anything about everyone, yet we love them so much. They read your email, know what you are searching for on the internet, and know where you will be and when (along with who else knows and who else will be there). Although its just a stupid book it makes me smile when I hear things like that :P .

Do you mean this FAQ?
Who's the service for?
All open source developers. If you plan to start an open source project, we encourage you to create a project on Google Code.
They got a google-code-hosting group too.

What is code.google.com?
Code.google.com is our site for external developers interested in Google-related development. It’s where we’ll publish free source code and lists of our API services.
