Can't be bothered

Post by Ollie Saunders »

*sigh* I can't be arsed to do any more programming today and yet there is so much to do and exciting new things at that.
Anybody got any self-motivation solutions?

If I'm not motivated to actually write code I get out pen and paper, site myself in the living room with a cup of tea in front of the TV and I procrastonate for a while. By the time I've finished scribbling down ideas without too much thinking I need to start implementing them. If I really can't be arsed I just put my feet up :)

Well I've just been listening to an audio book whilst lying on the floor.
Bill Bryson's - Shot History of Nearly Everything 8)

Then I put some food in the oven and moped about for a short while and wayhey I'm coding again!
I suddenly realised I was very hungry I think that might have played a part.

Some days I get no work done because I have energy swings. Sometimes I am almost hyper; an irritation or hilarity (depending on your tastes) to those around me. Then minutes later I can become incredible tired, barely able to stay awake and uninterested in most things. Between them I get absolutely nothing done at all.

My parents have been away all week so I have been totally alone; not to my displeasure. So far I have experienced none of my usual energy swings. I couldn't possibly begin to isolate which of the many many differences in lifestyle caused the absense of my parents might attribute to this improvement but it certainly is worth a ponder. Its remarkible, in fact, how differently I behave when nobody is around for a long period of time. I live in a detacted house so I can, within reason, pretty much make as much noise as I like. Singing Oasis has been a favourite :D

If too tired to program, which is a highly mental activity, do some heavy work. Go to the gym or do some yard work. Somehow, work up a sweat. Once rested, programming will be much easier. :)

I think I'm in the same situation. I've been coding at work... then right home to code some more. I've been on a binge. I need to go outside. That's what I'll do. I'll go outside afterwork. Do something ungeeky today.

I did some yard work today actually. I did loads of stuff:
  • Watered the plants (in tubs)
  • Fed the fish in the pond
  • Filled up the bird feeders (my parents love birds)
  • Picked 30 plums of our plum tree (tastey :P)
  • Swept up all the paths, that takes about half an hour and is surprisingly rigorus
  • Tidied up the kitchen, that was covered with 5 days worth of unwashed stuff xD
It all felt good.
Order was restored from chaos.

Perhaps I should do these things at times of programming difficulty rather than before.
