Making beats on the computezor

Post by daedalus__ »

Does anyone do this?

What do I use? I've seen a couple of pieces of software floating around but don't know what I should pick up?

I think he's talking about software to compose beats... like those you would hear on a Jay-Z album.

No.

You ever watch Samurai Champloo? I'm next to damn sure those are all samples.

Too many rap/hip-hop beats are very sucky, I want to make ones good for listening.

Then I want to make some for a movie (short) about Samurai that I want to do with my friend if I can ever convince her. :D

Get Traktor by Native Instruments. If you want to go all out and spend lots of money you can buy final scratch and connect to your exisiting vinyl decks to use time-coded vinyl which manipulates digital media on the computer in realtime. It's very cool, I used to play around with it.

EDIT | Oh... and we'll have only good beats :P Broken Ones ;)

I'm thinking there is alot more to than that I know about.

Two things are I don't have a record player or a keyboard, I want to be able to do everything in one or two pieces of software.

^^

I don't really know anything about this, or music, but I decided I need to start trying to find new hobbies. The only thing I do anymore is code!!!! ...and drink, lol.

Get a subscription to "Computer Music" great mag I've been subscribed since about issue 14. Alas no more as I'm a web dev now but I was going to write electronic soundtracks for a living at one stage.

Anyway for beats I'd recommend Native Instruments Battery, seriously good, or any good ROMpler. You'll need a VST host to run it in Reason and FL studio are good choices or you can go for one of the big boy sequencers like Sonar (my favourite by miles, windows only), Logic (Mac only) or Cubase. There are plenty of freeware seqs out there and some are pretty good in fact.

If you want to save some money I'd suggest buying just any old issue of Computer Music because the cover CD has about 10 separate pieces of free software that the editor had written especially for the mag over the years and all of it is absolute great. Not pro quality stuff but loads of character and plenty to play with.
