By default on windows XP if you put your laptop on battery the monitor dims a little (to save energy I suppose). How do I stop this?

If in a control panel, it should be in your display adapter's controls. If it's not there, I can't recall of any easily accessible location to alter that setting. With my laptop it's in the hardware. However, I can adjust the brightness via keyboard controls. The settings are separately kept as far as I can tell on mine.

Its in Power Management. I think you can right click the desktop and go to properties. From their you may be able to get to it through 'Display'. Otherwise, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Power Management. It'll be an option in there.

Are you sure about that? It isn't in mine.

I'm not on my laptop right now, so the path may be incorrent, but I know it is in Power Management. I know all too well, seeing as my latptop has yet to get the power settings right (dims when it is plugged in and brights when it is on battery). No matter how often I change the settings, they always get wonked and go back to backwards.

It's been a while since I looked at my bios settings, but there may be one for it in there. I can't test that theory right now as my laptop is in the middle of doing my homework for school. :)

'Power options' is not an option? What about in the 'Display' portion of the control panel (or from Properties from the Desktop)? Crap, I need to get home so I can look for it. I'll post back when I can if you haven't gotten it straightened out by then.

Start -> Control Panel -> (Performance and Maintenance ->) Power Options. I just checked this on my XP Machine.

The only setting even closely related is "turn off monitor" .. which uhm, is about turning the display off, not dimming it. :P

Holy crap, I was way off.

The way you change this (if XP works right) is to manually adjust the brightness of the monitor when the plug is not attached. On my computer it's the [fn]+f8 key combination. I am not sure which it is on yours. The way XP is supposed to work is that when you adjust the settings XP remembers it until you change it again.

I am so sorry for the bad advice. I was thinking of something totally different. Thanks Feyd for setting me straight. Again, sorry about that.

In my dell laptop it was in the BIOS.
