I read on another news article that his website's bandwith is skyrocketing within the few hours of his death.

I heard this on the news right when I woke up this morning... it actually really upset me. I usually am not that effected by this sort of thing (since I don't know him personally) but for some reason it really bothers me... his wife seemed like she really loved the guy
and he just had a daughter like last year. It's quite sad.

The unlucky thing is, AFAIK (some nerd is gunna correct me here!) sting rays have one of those barbed tail things like a fish hook so that it goes in easy, but is difficult to get out. They usually only cause minor injuries because you basically just rip it out of where ever it goes into you and you'll be alright, but I heard it managed to hit his heart, don't know how true that is, all I've read is that it got him in the chest.

He was filming for a documentary, and they said that the 2.5 meter sting ray got him right in the heart. He died instantly.nickvd wrote:While very sad, as the loss of any life is never really a good thing, I was pretty amazed that it wasn't a croc or similar beast who got the last laugh. Due to his line of work it was more or less inevitable, but who saw a stingray impaling his chest?

I read a few articles and some marine biologist suggested that it didn't actually penetrate through his ribs into his heart as their only little barbs (like a bee's stinger I assume) the fact it was so close to his heart (hit him in the chest) didn't help much, but she suspects he reacted to the sting, whereas most people don't. Cardiac arrest ensued.jayshields wrote:The unlucky thing is, AFAIK (some nerd is gunna correct me here!) sting rays have one of those barbed tail things like a fish hook so that it goes in easy, but is difficult to get out. Post mortem will determine actual cause of death, but the Doctor who arrived on scene and eventually declared his DOA suggested the same thing as the biologist...
I'm getting the impression that these stinger's don't actually have like 6 inch long nails that stick into you gut, I think what your reading is mostly media hype
Sad none the less...he was a great guy...but I somehow knew this day would come
