losing your job...what are the laws?

Post by panic! »

Hey,
well basically today I got some bad news, the company I work for is basically...no longer, totally out of the blue, not for financial reasons, we owe no money to anyone, but due to personal issues higher up the chain. Investors etc.

Everyone (4 of us) is losing their jobs, we've been told we'll be paid up until now, but our contracts state that if we're ever laid off that we'll be paid for 4 weeks, surely this should stand? where should I go for advice?

man this really sucks :(

Talk to your bosses, remind them of the contract's severance clauses. If he denies it, talk to a lawyer.

I will, it's all still a bit up in the air, I don't have a lawyer I think in the UK less people get involved with Legal stuff especially at my tender age, but I will find out what the law is...It's all a bit vague unfortunately.

If you're in the UK, contact your nearest Citizen's Advice Bureau. They should be able to at least point you in the appropriate direction. Get your co-workers involved as well.

[Edit] And don't panic!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I'll try not to! I've slept on it and I feel alot more positive, I can always work freelance and theres loads of employed work in Brighton and London for good developers, it's just getting out there and finding it. I will phone the advice Bureau today though, thank you!
