Log Analyzer

Post by SpecialK »

I am to research some log analyzers and choose one for our company to use.

The restrictions are it needs to be able to run on a unix box and is open source.

What analyzers do you recommend?

Sorry, these would be for Apache logs. My manager wants them for unofficial reports just for our own usage which is why a free version is desired.

I am leaning towards AWStats as it has more features then Analog or Webalizer.

If you want to be immature, do us all a favor by not posting ~panic.

feyd, while I agree it was immature and somewhat silly...it is not your place as a moderator of a so called "open community" to suggest someone does not post, especially in public.

As a moderator, you should have notified him in a PM like you do me when I've broken the rules and is the main reason I'm being public about this.

IMHO you wave your metaphorical hammer way to much, as such, if this community was truely open to the public input/opinion, etc (and had no vested interest - which I find hard to believe) I would vote you (personally) out of power and suggest someone else take the reins for a while (no this is not a plug for a self-promotion :P).

OP, check out: http://awstats.sourceforge.net/

HTH

Cheers :)

Im not trying to bring the mod hammer down on myself; but I agree with Hockey on ONLY the part about feyd having should have notified him privately.

But I think Hockey should have said the rest in a more-private area.

feyd donates lots of his time moderating this forum. feyd does a good job, but there are times when it could be taken down a notch. That was a bit harsh on hockey's part, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

If whatever was said was insulting or rude, I would have mentioned it as well. If it was meant to be funny, probably not.

I've been asked to tame it down in respect for the youngin's that potentially visit this site...

Judging by the statement made, I suspect, the individual to be of a "younger" group then feyd or myself...so out of respect for the youngin's (potentially) he should know better than to chastise someone for making such a juvenile comment.

I made my remarks publicly known, because thats the best way to have things changed. Personally I find feyd to brash to be moderating a public community forum.

I personally don't appreciate being threatened or told "how" or "why" something must be done...but rather as any human I prefer professionalism (regardless of whether I've been professional) and a being gentlly informed of my wrong doings. Totalitarianism never works and only makes people angry and revolt (me for example).

feyd donates much of his time, I agree, but so do I...is my opinion any less appreciated? Probably, based on the fact I argue with everyone and have developed virtual anti-trusts with some members :P

The point is, I've made my point... :P I can breathe easier now

Hockey,

The best way of going about this is via PM or, if you believe a rule in the forum rules is unfair or inaccurate post here. If you believe your grievances really, really, really affect the foundation on which this forum is based then voice them in a new thread in General Discussion and try to make as coherent a case as possible.
Why PM first? Because this is a PHP-forum which people visit to learn about PHP - meta-discussion are only interesting to those involved.

AWSTATS is very good. A search will turn up some alternatives which you can compare if you need extra seasoning.

OFF-TOPIC:
Immaturity or off-colour (non-explitive) comments are not prohibited by the rules last I checked... This would lead me to assume it was feyd's personal opinion which he is perfectly entitled to make public. That he is a Moderator is beside the point - though it naturally lends more weight which is a bit unfortunate. A PM or humourous retort would have been more effective and less inflamatory.

Apologies to the OP for further hijacking the thread ;).

In my experience, AWstats is more powerful, but Webalizer is easier to set up.
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

Yeah, AWstats is great. Webalizer eh, maybe easier to set up, but the reporting isn't very good. There are some great tutorials that walk you through setting up AWstats, but you really don't even need those, the documentation is great.
