General Purpose Video Card Recommendation

Post by Benjamin »

Does anyone have any advice on video cards? I'm buying a new monitor so I figure I'll get a new card along with it. I'll budget $200-$460 for the video card.

Don't recommend ATI, you couldn't give that to me. I'm pretty much looking for a good card that has an Nvidia chip in it.

EDIT: Something without 4 turbo-prop fans in it would be nice. I want something poweful but not something with a bunch of components that can wear out.

It's weird timing...;).

It's general purpose so unless you include games in that category any of Nvidia's 7xxx series would be right at home. I have an Nvidia 6600GT even, and it's more than capable. If you do include gaming, then you should be aware that Windows Vista will introduce DirectX 10 (which is not backwards compatible to WinXP). A few games are already stating they will be Vista titles. DirectX 10 cards are not (AFAIK) yet available. So if you intend to play games - it would be worth waiting for the next card generation... If you don't mind a short lifespan or even playing newer games on DirectX 9 then fire away with a 7800 or above.

Minus gaming though - any recent Nvidia is fine.

I think I remember paying somewhere around $360-390 for each of my 7800 GTX (256M) cards in January. I believe I got them from newegg.
