I'm reading a good book right now 'Marley and Me' (if you've ever owned Labradors, or really any big dog for that matter...it's a must read) and it started me wondering what books you all enjoy (or have enjoyed)?
My favorite book of all time is 'All the Pretty Horses' by Cormac McCarthy.

I actually just re-bought my favorite book because I haven't read it for three years or so... it's called The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It's absolutely magnificent... it's so epic! Basically it takes you through the lives of about 10 people through 40 or 50 years back in the 1500s (I believe). All of the characters have one thing in common and that is basically the building of a cathedral. I loved this book so much that I was actually sad when I finished it because I missed the characters... that's a freaking good book.

3. The First, Second and Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson
You will spend a long time working your way through these. About 3000 small-typed pages worth. Well worth it though, it's epic, the storyline isn't too shabby - but the language usage is superb.
2. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
First Bronte book I read. It's excellent. Read it. Just do.
1. 1984 by George Orwell
Read it before I knew it was famous - only when I recognised so much did I realise how famous it was. A very, very, very well written and fascinating book - if a little depressing. Must read.

Recent recreational reads in no particular order
"Shantaram" by Gregory David Roberts
"Stories I stole" by Wendell Steavenson
"Lord of the Rings" (we all know who wrote that)
"The World is Flat" by Thomas L. Friedman
"Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke
"Brethren" by Robyn Young (very good read if you want to immerse yourself into some rich historical crusade stuff)
"Albert Speer: His Battle with Truth" by Gitta Sereny (one of the best biographies ever written)
That's it off the top of my head.

well, haven't really read Lord of the Rings in a long time (used to be a total fan when I was in my teens and early twens), but it belongs up there anyway
