My parents

Hello all,

It is my first post :)

I want your thoughts on this:
Do you feel that because your parents may have supported you when you were younger, that you "owe" it to them to support them now?

(Pay the bills they run up etc, just because they did it for you when you were younger and unable to work)

Thanks.

If you're talking about supporting them financially during their retirement, then it would depend on their savings. If they don't have much savings then of course... However, if they were smart (as my parents have been/will be) then they will have more than enough money for retirement and I wouldn't feel obligated to support them financially.

Unless they ran into problems that they couldn't prevent (disease, death, etc), then I wouldn't feel the need. I may loan them money, but I wouldn't support them.

You can't think of it in a one-generation scheme, you need to remember that their parents supported them when they were younger, so by supporting you, they're breaking even.

What a weird thread, anyways, I picked depends.

Presuming you mean financially, then yeah, ofcourse, anyone would support their parents if they had no money and you had some spare. Feeling obliged though, no, no one should feel obliged to do anything. If a situation demands you support your loved ones in any way, shape or form any proper person would do so.

You can also look at it this way - they (the parents) also supported their parents, so why shouldn't you?

Some traditions are meant to be broken. :)

because it's tradition doesn't make it healthy or good.

anyways, seeing as they helped you develop and grow as a resonably healthy adult (i'm making asumtions here i don't know you from a crack in the wall) then if they need help shouldn't you help out? karma will come to take a very large chunk out of your ass if you don't.

If my parents needed my help I'd help them as much as I could. Obviously, if it's financial help they need I can only do what I can manage within my means. If they need looking after in their old age there's no damn way I'd see them off to a home before I have a go at looking after them myself. It's just part of the whole circle of life. What's the difference between your parents and your friends. We all help each other because we're only human and we care about each other.

Overhere (in Belgium) the state can actually order you to pay a part of the retirement home bill of your parent in case they can't pay the bill themselves...

(amounts depend on your annual income, and the number of people in your 'own' family: http://www.kbg.be/info/infofiches-belan ... schaal.htm).

My father was a Marine, it was drilled into me, from a very young age, that it's my duty to support my family. If money was all that was required for me to do my duty for my parents then I would have gotten off cheap.

If your parents supported you as a child, it seems only fair that you support them in their ever hoary days we affectionately call the golden years...
