Can I just add a dual core?

I am finding my computer to be pretty slow now that I am trying to do video editing. I have a 3.6ghz Pentium 4 with 2 GB RAM and a GeForce 6800.
To increase my editing workflow... a dual core processor would be a big boost in performance.
I have never done any hardware upgrades and know little about PC hardware. Can I simply purchase a dual core processor and just swap it out with my current P4 3.6ghz? I don't want to spend $$$ on a whole new computer. Any ideas? THanks.

you'll have to make sure its clock speed will work with the FSB speed on your motherboard. also *obviously* you'll need to make sure the pin settings are the same.

Thanks guys... has anyone heard when the quad core by intel is due out? I thought it was this November?
And when it finally does hit the market... will it be very high priced? Does computer processors work like that? As soon as they hit the market they are very high priced... but couple months later the price really drops?

I think you will find you will need to buy a new motherboard if you want a Dual Core. BTW, do not buy the Pentium D or Core Duo. Make sure you buy a Core 2 Duo. Those dual core processors smoke just about everything out there, even AMD, for less money.
