A question for an administarator

Post by smoky989 »

I am thinking about purchasing a V Bulletin Forum package to use on my website. I do not believe this forum is a V Bulletin forum but it is very similar in looks and I'm sure functionality. What I need to know is how much space is added to the database each month. I don't want to purchase it if A forum like yours takes up too much space. Could one of you tell me roughly how many posts per month and how much space those posts take up? Thanks in advance.

These forum's run on phpBB.

The space a forum takes up on installation is not important, and the amount of data is dependant on the size of the community. As of this post, these forums and all it's glory only take up 44.52 MB of space.

The size of the posts are really relative. The posts here might be larger on average, because many include source code.

We are also averaging about 3,000 posts / month over the lifetime of the board.

Nevertheless, vBulliten costs well over $100, and phpBB is absolutely free.

Indeed. I like both phpBB and Invision.

Whatever you do, stay way from the ASP forum "Snitz!". Very, very ugly.

phpBB is the one i recommend for personal or professional use.

Very easily cusomizable to your needs and there is many professional templates out there on the web. If you do a google search or visit the official siteyou can find them.

why pay for something when you can get the exact same functionality and in most opinions better overall experience with a free product? :)

I was an administrator on the X-Entertainment.com forums for a while... They used vBulletin and i can honestly say it is worth every penny.

phpBB is nice, but it's too clunky and not as in-depth as vB.

Trust me. After administering both, i'd rather pull out my wallet and spend a hundred beans on a copy of vB.

just curious, do you get the vB source when you buy it, or do they encrypt their PHP (or is it even PHP)?

You get the source (this explains why there's a lot of pirate copies out there ;) )

From what i recall, you can purchase the basic license and you're forced to keep the "Powered by vBulletin" stuff at the bottom of each page.

But no, they don't encrypt it.

Don't they jumble it all up - funny variable names and stuff like that - to make it more difficult for people to hack about with it?

Nope.

I mean, if they did jumble up the variables, they'd still have to reference the variables elsewhere...

It's been a while since i laid my hands on the commercial vb source, but basically, the paid-for version is just a booster from the "lite" version they have.

Hell, you can probably download the lite version and put in the features they left out ;D
