I have noticed that the ASP's (Application Service Providers) is gaining popularity in the corporate world. The idea is great because you do not need any programmers or servers at your company. When presenting options to an executive committee it is hard to compete with a system that has almost no up front costs. This is also great for small companies as you usually pay per use so a small company does not need to invest heavily in software and development up front.

Will this be the answer to the shortage of experienced programmers in places the United States?

For some it certainly could be, however not everyone can use those solutions. For instance, a company that must have very very very high up time where internet traffic can die or get lost, or even has large lag. What about a company that is farther out into the wilderness where bandwidth limitations and power will come into play pretty quickly?

I can see a lot of pros and cons.

For a large company the internet being up and not lagged is critical regardless of any ASP. In the wilderness it is easier to get good bandwidth then find a couple experience programmers and hardware engineers. Even in a medium city it can be pretty tough finding good talent.

The biggest risk with ASP's now is security of your data as it is not leaving the confines of your intranet.
