Anybody use SquirrelMail that can help?

I had Squirrel mail installed at one time but when I was moved to a new server by my host it quit working. Something about file writing issues. I do a fair amount of PHP but server technology is beyond me and the issue was never resolved. So I quit using webmail and am using Mailwasher but I hate it.
So I'm attempting to use Squirrel on another server (a site I host for my homeowners assn) to access the mail on my server, without knowing if that will actually work. I've inquired several places, including the SqMail site, but have gotten no input so I'm just goint to try it so see what I can do. I have installed it on the other server but it wants a username and password. I don't recall what I was using and cannot find any file that can be deleted to start new or any file that contains a password. So that is not working out very well at this point.
I really would like to use webmail, but the server I am on simply does not allow PHP to write to files and they don't seem to have a solution to that. (Applications that work fine on other hosts fail on this server.) I rather intensly dislike Mailwasher and cannot use it from remote locations in any case. I would like to be able to check mail when I'm travelling without having to set up a email account on the computer that I'm using in, for instance, a local Kinko's.
There are reasons why I cannot simply move to another host at this point, so can anyone suggest how I might go about setting up a webmail on server A to access my email on server B from wherever I might be at any time?
(Sorry for the lengthy post, but...)
