Outlook emails

Ok so I started a new job and the guy who left had his email setup in Outlook. Well there are so many unread/undownloaded messages that Outlook crashes every time I try to open a folder or if I even begin to download the mail. The problem really lies in the fact that one of the emails in a folder has passwords that I need.

I tried importing it all into Thunderbird but it keeps say that outlook is not my default mail application. I found the gigantic .pst file that I bet has all the mail and everything in it but I cant open it in any editor because its over a gig in size.

So please, how can I get this freakin email!?

Can you make Outlook your default mail program, then load Thunderbird?

Are .pst files text based? I thought they were encrypted. If it was text based you could grep for what you need and/or use the linux commands "more" or "less" ;)

When you say Outlook was crashing was it hanging or closing or giving errors? Might be worth giving it a long while to finish whatever it's trying to do if it's hanging :)
