I recently bought my little sister an iPod nano. Cool stuff. The shuffle looks a bit too plain.

I've got a first-gen Nano which is in desparate need of an upgrade.

Funny story.. I actually accidentally ran it through the wash in my jean pocket, and I thought it was done. Two weeks later, I decided to fire it back up again, and bingo, it worked. Perfectly.

But as time went on the battery life got really crappy and now the battery bar doesn't even work.

After shopping around, I'd personally would want to get a new video-capable iPod, but I'm going to wait until this one is a little more dysfunctional. :P For my current usage, I can still go a good 3-4 days before it's dead and it still plays my music/podcasts fine.

I picked entirely around what I want to do with it.. I love the extra space, since my Nano doubles as a portable storage drive for me. I keep essential stuff like a firewall, antivirus, spyware remover, and etc on it so if I'm at someones place and they need one of those, I can just copy + paste it onto their My Docs and they're good to go. The bigger drive means more files, more songs, more pictures, and more video.. so that's a big plus since I do plan on buying video for it for boring trips or a long wait of some kind. Plus more music variety is good, because after a few weeks of listening to the same 300ish songs, they tend to get kinda stale.

If you want and are going to use all those extra things the full iPod can do, I'd say invest in that. If you want them, but don't really need video and don't care for the extra room, I'd say get a Nano. Then if you don't want the ability to pick and choose your music, and you just want something that'll play music, I'd say don't even go for a shuffle.... there is cheaper stuff out there that'll do the same thing and in many cases they'll give you Nano-like features.

Well, I bought the new Shuffle yesterday and my PC didn't recognize it.
So I left it in the dock for about 5 hours and when I came back, my songs were on the iPod and it was charged and played music, but when I plugged it again, it didn't recognize it. I tried re-installing iTunes, I tried to install it on a totally different PC... nothing. So again I left it in the dock (on the other PC) and went to bed. In the morning there was a message which was telling me that the iPod was sync with another library... "would you like to replace the songs bla bla...." - which means that during the night it recognized it. I clicked "No" and that's it... didn't recognize it anymore.
Now when I put it in the dock, it charges it for about 1-2 mins then stops and Windows is giving me a message similar to "Unknown device...".
This iPod doesn't come with a CD, all you should do is downloading iTunes, but shouldn't there be some driver for it?

Oh and another thing... all of a sudden... it recognized it and told me there was an update for the iPod software - some bug fixes. I clicked "Download and install", it started downloading and then stopped all of a sudden and again it didn't recognize it anymore.

Anyone knows what I'm talking about, what should I do, how the hell can I get a driver for it (if needed), suggestions... anything?
If you want me to give more details, just ask.

Thanks everybody

In regard to the iPod video - get a Creative Zen Vision: M instead. I got a Creative Zen Micro back when the iPod mini first came out and I was very pleased with it, I still use it, but I'm gunna get the Zen Vision: M soon.

Update: After buying a USB 2.0 card it works.

Don't buy the second generation iPod shuffle unless you have USB 2.0. Apple probably made a mistake since here it says USB 1.1 and 2.0, but on their store it says USB 2.0.
