Feelings on Ruby?

Post by BDKR »

I just got a job doing Ruby. I had been having a dickens of a time finding a PHP job but this gig popped up where they were willing to deal with someone that
is willing to learn Ruby and Ruby on Rails. I started reading (Ruby in a Nutshell) Thursday night when I got back into town after the interview (Interview was in Orlando, but I live in Tampa) and started hacking Friday. I managed to get a a command line phone book ap about 85% complete since then.

It's a killer language. If you like Python, you'll like this fer shizzle!

I'm about to shift gears and start assimillating RoR but I was curious to hear what people here thought of the language. Don't get me wrong tho! I love PHP and my current projects / web sites are going to continue in PHP. But of course, my time screwin' around with Python had an effect on how I see PHP and Ruby is affecting my view of PHP as well.

One thing is certain: I prefer to do OO in Python and Ruby. But that said, I love PHP for it's flexibility.

Anyway, anybody here mess with Ruby? What are your thoughts on it?

I'm in the exact same situation as you. Just got a job, and they don't mind that I don't know Ruby yet, because of my PHP experience.

What operating system are you on? Have you found any tutorials that you thought were very good?

I normally use Linux (FC3 or FC5), but the work environment with my new employer is Mac OS X and FreeBSD.
