My new Quad-Core QX6700

Hey guys... just got my new quad-core PC. Runs great and is super fast with multi-core coded applications. However, I've been monitoring my CPU temps and under stress it routinely runs hot around 78 C. And at idle, it is about 64 C. I am by no means a hardware guru and thought I would seek some opinions on whether or not these were okay temperatures. I know the quad-core QX6700 is an extreme chip and thus will run a lot hotter than any other chips out there, but thought I would ask someone who knows these things. BTW... I am using a CPU cooler (Artic Freezer Pro 7) and ceramic thermal compound.

78 is nothing most often, don't worry about it too much.

The software you are using to monitor it should have an alarm level. When it routinely gets really close you may want to consider better cooling.

Yea... the Asus Probe monitoring software basically alarms non-stop... even at idle (66 C). I just turned off the alarms thinking that perhaps that software really isn't written for these brand new quad-core chips. I guess you have to start taking things with a grain of salt when you are the edge of processor technology. But either way... spent a ton of dough on this system and don't want to unknowingly fry my processor. The MB temp is reading at a solid 47 C as well. I don't know if that is high either. With the amount of workload I put my PC through throughout the day, I bet my average CPU temp is about 70 C. I have some buddies who are yelling at me that this is wayyyy too hot, but they aren't familiar with the quad-core chips. After some research, it seems they do run very hot... but haven't been able to find out if these temps I am getting are within the "acceptable" tolerance levels.

The papers that came with it should list acceptable performing temperature ranges. If not, the Intel site should have some technical data on acceptable ranges somewhere. You may need to call them to verify and get a definitive answer. You may also want to talk to Asus too since it is their board and software.

That's certainly hotter than I would have thought safe, and probably why the mobo is going off. I guess you pack 4 of those cores in the same space as two and you get some crazy heat.

Seems to go along with that as normal for a quad core...
