Aren't the prices of those supposed to be roughly the same as the price of buying a HD DVD and BluRay player separately? heh
Plus if one does fall (BluRay!

) you'll have paid all that extra money for nothing...
Who knows, maybe there will be something good announced at CES this year in regards to this.... 3 days left at the show...

Well, if history is a gauge to measure this debate by then HD-DVD has won. Why you ask? Apparently the porn industry has all but officially chosen HD-DVD as the format to publish on.
Unfortunately due to forum rules I cannot link to the Slashdot article because the lovely users have chosen to use inappropriate language on the page.

Yeah, I heard about that. Apparently Blu-Ray is not allowing that sort of content...
That's really weird, if ya ask me. It's like a car company picking and chosing who can drive the vehicles they make.
It's not as if I'm supporting more porn in every format possible, but these sorts of moves really do set a dangerous precedent.

The porn industry does tend to move forward a lot quicker than any other entertainment segment. How long ago is it that Movies were being sold for download? Now compare that to porn which saturated the internet YEARS ago.
I actually side with feyd - if the Porn industry adopts HD-DVD and if Blu-Ray really is restricting use, then that will drive a lot of adoption for HD-DVD.
Also - a few dual format players are being announced (think LG made an announcement at CES recently). Eventually, you'll have dual format players, and as at least one (non-Sony Entertainment) movie studio is announcing support for, dual format discs (stick a double layer on each side and drop the DVD front-up labelling).

Do we really want HD porn? I can remember quite a few videos that I'd wished had a little less definition!

I think we should kurb that discussion there, Kieran.. I'm not sure I (or many others) would like to know more!
I've said it for years - the porn industry is what drives the internet and media technology. Teams/Groups who are trying to progress with 3D interfaces, such as goggles etc, are having more success from porn industry businesses than any other genre.
iirc it was porn that was the deciding factor for VHS vs Betamax, too. It also won the war for 16mm film, too.

I just noticed something in this thread so here is a quote that relates to it.
From the
official site:
Is it HD DVD or HD-DVD?
Glad you asked. Seems like there is a bit of confusion there, so let's clear it up. There is no hyphen. Never was, never will be.
Just HD DVD. Simple, clean and, well, it just looks a lot better.

I don't think a winner is going to happen. Unlike Beta/VHS where it was hard to have a dual player, it will be easy to do with Blu-Ray and HD DVD. I think all players will be dual players and different companies/studios will then sell on whatever type of disk they want. The Blu-Ray does have some significant advantages in terms of copy protection while the HD DVD is cheaper to make for smaller companies.
