If you are worried about addiction go for single player story games. A couple of classics (really cheap if you can find them) I adore:
  • Fallout (Interplay)
  • System Shock 2 (Irrational Games)
  • Half life (1 not 2)

It should be okay for most games. You likely won't be able to top out the graphics settings in many current games, but you should be able to get pretty good settings without too much issue.

I have a GeForce 6600 GT and I haven't found a game I can't play. I can play Oblivion with medium-max settings and no FPS lag. I haven't seen a more graphically intense game than Oblivion yet.

You will be able to play almost anything on max settings. I'm presuming it's PCI-E, but if not it will still be fine.

Oblivion is one of the best games I've ever played, but you state you don't like RPG's; neither do I, but this game is amazing. You'll get 30+ hours of gameplay out of it.

personally I play battlefield 2 when I want an action game, but you do have to buy all of the add-ons for it which is a bit of a drag. The gameplay in bf2 is different to games like half life tho, I find games like half life and CS are alot quicker and more of a deathmatch game than bf2, I can hold my own in bf2 online but put me in CS and I'll get owned in seconds. Half Life 2 has a single player game that you can play as well, where as BF2 just has the online maps running locally as a single player game.

I have a 7600 gtx and I've found plenty that tax my system at the highest settings.

A PCI-E one? I can't imagine a game would put stress on your system at max settings, presuming the rest of your system is up to scratch. Mind you, I don't use AA or AF at all. Putting them to a high setting could be causing the problems; personally, I can't tell the difference with them on or off, but then again I'm not really an avid gamer anymore.

~phpdevuk: Curse of Monkey Island is one of my all-time favourite PC games. I'm actually playing through it for about the 3rd time right now and as always I've forgot what to do on a certain bit and I'm stuck :x

I think a 1st person shooter is probably my best bet. I'll take a look into BF2 and CSS. I'll probably side with CSS since I am familiar with the game already and liked it in the past. However, does anyone have any idea what it costs to play Madden 07 online? I can't find any information about their subscription plans.

try company of heroes and bf2142.

Mind you I play at the highest resolution my monitor supports (1920x1200)...except for stupid bf2142...no widescreen, ugh!

Heh, I own Battlefield 2 and all the expansions, aswell as CSS and more recently Battefield 2142. Mark my words, Battlefield 2142 blows both of these games out of the water.

Battlefield 2142 suprisingly doesn't support native widescreen resolutions.. my 28" monitor doesn't play nicely with it.. :(

I really don't recommend Oblivion, it's a joke of a game (yes, I have noticed you don't like RPG, but still).
