Buying my first computer game

No one has suggested this yet...Day of Defeat: Source
It's the same engine has hl2/CS:S and it's awesome. It's a WWII multiplayer fps.
CS:S is great too. I wouldn't recommend BF2 or BF2142 unless you like getting blown up right when you spawn (because enemies often camp near spawn areas).
And if you want something that looks awesome for FREE try America's Army, it's made by the U.S. Army.

I know of World Warcraft as my friend is addicted to it. And from the looks of it, it really isn't my cup of tea. Mostly because I have played those style games before and I always suck really bad at them.

I still think that seodevhead should get the Quest for Glory series.
P.S. if anyone is interested in knowing more about that series or where to find it, pm me.

I own the following games that have been spoken of here:
- Oblivion (actually the entire Elder Scrolls series, fun games)
- Counter-strike: source
- Counter-strike 1.6
- Half-Life 2
- World of Warcraft (level 60 priest in magtheridon)
- Day of Defeat: Source
- Battlefield 2
For you, I'd personally recommend Counter-Strike: Source ... There are a few issues though that you should be away of before you purchase it. Namely, you'll get frustrated A LOT if you dont have prior FPS (or even if you do) experience. The game is extremely intense and even after years of playing it i still have nights where i get owned completely. Of course thats another thing, I'm still playing it... Whereas I havent even touched oblivion and after 4 months I'm finding WoW becoming more and more boring (in fact I quit CS and just played wow for a while, now i'm back
). WoW took a lot more of my time away from other things, though CS has as well.
Now, I did recommend CS so of course I have an answer to frustrations, etc. There are several types of popular games (actually mods, but you dont have to download anything, its all done server side) that help take some frustration out. Deathmatch servers are fun, it means you basically respawn right away and are thrust right back into the action (sometimes literally - often I'm respawned meters away from where I died) and its a lot of fast paced fun with no downtime. It can also help you improve your aiming skills a lot because you arent having to sit around in between rounds. If you do buy the game the only way to find these servers is to check the server titles for "Deathmatch" or "DM" or something along those lines.

Half Life 2 is likely the best FPS currently available. F.E.A.R. is good also, but it seems a lot more focused on action, and has far less depth and character. Both, I found, play very well on a GeForce 6600GT at medium to high detail levels at a 1024*768 resolution. With a 7600GT I doubt there's much you currently can't play - likely you'll have issues with Oblivion, and of course the next generation DirectX10 games due this coming year - but otherwise you're set.
For RPGs - Oblivion. It does have several flaws for a hardened fan of the Elder Scrolls series like myself (I hate, despise and loath assigning the experience of a free form world to "levelling") but with Oblivion there are tons of mods and updates you can try out, one of the best being the revised gameplay offered by the Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul mod.
For Strategies, you can go with an RTS like Dawn of War or even Age of Mythology. For the more realistic minded, there's the entire Total War series to choose from which are all highly addictive strategies which I rate as among my favourite games for the PC.
If you're thinking FPS - definitely Half Life 2. You'll need a fast internet connection to update the game and the Source platform it's bundled with but other than the odd Source authentication process it's well worth playing.

Hi all. Been away for a long while, busy busy at work. Finally got a bit more time on my hands now after the end of year rush.
I noticed a few comments about Oblivion - I can vouch for the fact that it is an awesome game, and I can confirm that you need a pretty good system to play it on. I haven't got a great system - it's an Athlon XP 3000+, 1 Gig RAM, Radeon X1600 (256MB) but it runs reasonably well (35 FPS inside buildings, 20-25 outside), at 1024 x 768 with medium to high quality video. (I'd advise you to check out all the various "tweaks" suggested on the oblivion forums). It's such a good game that it's got my girlfriend (who hates computers) completely hooked. I can't even get near the damned computer anymore...
A few other decent games (IMHO):
- Morrowind (the prequel to Oblivion), which is a FPP Role Player, great gameplay and much less graphically intensive than its sequel.
- Sniper Elite, Third Person sniper simulator, graphically nice, a bit quirky but quite good fun.
- Rome - Total War, Strategy Game, manage a Roman family with the scope of taking over the whole of Europe.
Beware... You said you would want to play an hour a night after work... If you start with Morrowind or Oblivion, you'll be in front of your PC for months...

I went with Madden 07. Mostly because I have played the Madden game before and was generally familiar with how to play it and plus I like football.
I will be getting Counter-Strike Source however, in the coming weeks.. Adding that to my arsenal as well. I haven't had as much time as hoped to play, but after this month I should be able to play more regularly and finally beat some online opponents.
Madden 07 runs great on my machine.... no glitches. I don't even have to wait for anything to load. I think the most wait time for anything on the entire game is about 2 seconds. I guess thats a mix between the 18x plextor, the quad-core chip and my 4 GB ram
I love my new system.

You should be careful about what FPS you play. They all play fairly differently. Some are quite slow-paced while others are run-n-gunning your way through the map, still others may be slower-paced and require some strategy but still feel like a battlefield. I would think about it for a minute because it sucks to buy a game and then not like it. I've played many, many popular and some unpopular FPS games so hit me up if you want to talk about it.
