Sadly, this is true, but it's worth it just the same. You get to see 90% of the stuff without queing up, and when you do have to queue, it's nearly always fast moving. The only one you really have to queue for ages for is the vatican museum (not St. Peter's the cathedral, the actual museum).
All the good stuff is easily reachable on foot from the centre (Colloseum, Pantheon, St. Peter's, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, etc.)
I can't stress enough how much I love that city.
