Will Windows 2K server Edition operate fine as a standard home computer?
I'm sorting somebody out with a computer which used to be an old citrix server and don't really wanna have to buy a new windows disk for it.

that depends entirely on what you want to do with it.
some applications just straight up won't install. They'll give an error during the install process that says 'this application will not work on a server operating system'.
For most simple tasks though, I'd say yes, it will suffice.

The guys who uses it currently hogs our "main" PC in the lounge so that nobody else gets time to use it. He does only these things:
Plays music in iTunes
Chats to people online with MSN (he uses a webcam sometimes although this PC isn't gonna have a webcam anyway)
Wastes hours of time on MySpace and YouTube (firefox/ie, whatever)
That's all

I used server 2003 for a while and the only problems I ever had running applications on it happened when I was trying to run a game.

I used w2k advanced server for years as a desktop OS - never gave me any problems!
Though for what he does, it sounds like you could use a live CD and a thumbdrive

Free hard drive for you!

2K server is a bit overkill for a basic desktop, but it's not too bad. It'd be worse if it was Cluster Server 2003.

Yeah I know, it's just what came with the PC. I think this thing is better suited to Win98 but I don't have a disk for that here in Manchester. Damn thing is having hard disk boot issues in any case

Do you need a PC? I mean you have the shiny mac now and uhm... isn't the PC a large paper weight?
If you need to test how stuff will run on a PC you could get Parallels.. or Boot Camp.

The PC isn't actually for him. Anyways, I got a Win 98 disc if you want me to post it, but it's not legit...

A friend of mine spent hours upon hours trying to get Windows XP Datacenter Server working efficiently on his single cpu desktop..

It's working fine
The only issue I've had is that AVG free version won't install unless I shell out for a license because it know's I'm running 2k server edition... grr...
