I don't want a smartphone, you're correct. I also don't want to pay for a phone at all; I currently get mine for free and pay £15 a month for 200 minutes cross network and 100 texts. I get to upgrade to one of the latest phones of my choosing every year; I currently have a SE w810i.

I also didn't realise the iPhone only had 4gb of memory until a minute ago, that's appalling for an mp3 player in todays world.

You're also right in saying I like to carry multiple things with me, but the way I look at it is:
If I want to make phone calls, I'll take my phone. If I want to take pictures, I'll take my camera. If I want to listen to music, I'll take my mp3 player. In the unlikely event I want to do all 3, I'm prepared to take all 3; as they all do they're own jobs very well, and they all run off a seperate battery, and price combined, they are cheaper than the iPhone.

It's all a matter of opinion, but being completely honest, if I could have a phone that's the size of a pack of chewing gum, with an outragously long battery life, but no mp3 support, no built in memory, no cololur screen, no camera, for the same price I pay now, I'd choose that. Same with mp3 players. Why have companies stopped producing 10gb-20gb mono-screen mp3 players? It really annoys me. I would've paid the same price as my current mp3 player (Zen Vision: M, £140) for an mp3 player with just a 20gb HDD, half the size, monocolour screen, removable battery which lasts considerable longer due to the non-colour screen, no video, no photos, no animations on the UI, etc. I almost bought a 3rd gen iPod 20gb but I couldn't find any that were in good condition, and eventually opted out because they are roughly the same size as the Zen, and also because of being forced to use iTunes (which I never liked with Apple products).

Like now, some smaller companies are producing simple, cheap phones mainly aimed at elderly users, but they still have completely unnecessary colour screens and cameras.

Anyways, I could rant forever. I doubt anyone will agree with me :)

I've had my nokia e70 for 2 weeks so far and I'm already convinced that an iPhone (with all of it's smartphoneness) would be enormously useful. I've always been a stickler for device separation, but in this case I'm sold. I just won't drain the battery with the ipod function (I'll use my iPod instead).

Incidentally, cell phone cameras and normal cameras (I have both) don't seem to compete for the same photos. Odd, but true.

The web/mail is the biggest draw for me - in-store price checking alone is nice. Movie times, bus schedules, restaurant locations.... all this is info I like having access to on the go. The iPhone will make that easier.

4GB and 8GB are pretty common for solid state based mp3 players these days. The iphone is solid state based. Larger capacities aren't really available in the space requirements unless you don't mind being charged $17K. .. but at least at that price, you get 2TB. :)

For impromptu pictures, the iphone will work great at 2MP. That's top level in most phones today, let alone smartphones where it's rare they even have one. For planned pictures, I'll bring the $4000 camera.

It, along with all over smartphones, are geered mostly at the business professional. Since my current dealings are almost entirely business, I'm definitely needing a smartphone. Until this point I hadn't found a single smartphone that would even come close to my needs. This will take care of all of them.

Now to wait for the GSM network upgrade..

Sorry to be cheeky/personal, but, like what? Surely you already have an mp3 player, you've just stated you've got an expensive camera, and you've almost certainly already got a pretty up-to-date phone. You're prepared to sell all this?

A smart-phone does nothing for me, but this one in particular puzzles me. Do you intend to edit/create office-type documents and such with this? It doesn't even support the industry standard, Microsoft.

This product comes across to me as the type of thing a well-off consumer would purchase rather than a business professional.

Most phone's becoming available today often have 3mp cameras, by the time the iPhone appears in the UK I doubt 2mp will seem impressive.

The major one is consolidating three, sometimes bulky (pda,) devices into one effective and seemingly uncompromising on their functionality or design. Then there's being able to pull up emails, do quick internet searches, find restaurants, check on my portfolio, send texts quickly, etc.

I'm not going to write real documents on it, that's a little absurd, but it certainly is possible.

You guys get larger cameras then we do then. The bulk, if not all, our phones top out at 2MP last I checked (which was a few weeks ago as the other moderators can attest to.)

Maybe I'll just wait for the iPhone Nano :)

As big as a lighter, only one single button (call/hang up), one small scroll wheel to browse contact list (imported from pc/mac/pda). Nothing else. Pure simplicity and elegance.

ahh i love it. no cell phone, no pda, no means of contacting me when i walk outside. I have a land line phone so if you need to talk to me, you can leave a message if its that important.

I dont know about you guys but after spending 8 hours coding and sitting infront of a computer I kinda like not having any form of technology strapped to my waist, let alone a piece that is going to let other people contact me and costs the same as a round trip plane ticket to Europe. No thanks, I have fun places to go not boring people to talk to.

Good point... I may not even get another cell phone when my Crapular contract is up. Gawd did I mention I HATE Cingular?
