New iPhone

Wow, did you guys see Steve's keynote with the new iPhone? That's just incredible. I'm sooo happy I still have a 50$, 5+ yr old mobile and haven't recently bought one of those pda/smartphones out there. Would have made me feel really bad now that I've seen this.

Well, it'll take some time saving before I can spend that much money on a phone. Not talking about the 499 price to buy it but also a pricey monthly bill, I presume. But when I buy a phone+, this will be it.

it's onlt available for Cingular. I have Cingular now, and I used to work for Cingular, and I can honestly say they are easily one of the worst, if not the worst company ever. I hate them and once my contract is up, I'm never giving them another penny.

That aside, yes, it's awesome!

I bought a $450 "smartphone" less than a month ago :-( (Nokia e70)

I was thrilled, because it had wifi, bluetooth, a fold-away keyboard, a non-WAP browser, a 2MP camera...etc.

Now I'm quickly selling it on eBay before it's worthless! I sooooo want an iPhone!

I'm in Canada, so I can use it with my existing provider: Fido (without the visual voicemail)

I'd love to have one, but I refuse to have Cingular as my cell service. They claim to have the best nationwide cell coverage, yet my entire area is lucky to be able to make a call on Cingular's network. Sprint and Verizon both get 2 bars in my basement, where Cingular can't even get 1 bar standing on top of my house.

That and I had them for over 2 years and they tried to hit me with the early termination fees on a non-renewing contract (1 year contract, month-to-month afterwards). Took me 4 hours to explain to them that I wasn't paying, and that I only signed a 1 year contract.

I am really happy we have the underline function right now because I freaking HATE Cingular.

Q4 over here in the UK. It looks like a lovely bit of kit and if it was available over here now I'd buy it right away ... but ... I'll have to wait. It also depends on what HTC, Nokia and SE have available by then. I doubt it'll be a simple decision.

Well, we'll have the time to think about the phone before it ships. Seems like a long time.

However, one thing that bothers me a bit is that even though it's nice to have everything in one package, I'm not so sure it is the best thing. Or at least, it has some drawbacks. Like when you're watching a movie, you have to be careful not to drain the battery (5 hrs max?) otherwise you can't call anymore.

For me, they could have ditched the camera and iPod and just make a very simple, easy-to-use phone with some solid emailing capabilities. Do one thing, and do it well. (and a bit cheaper :) )

I love Apple but I really HATE the fact that
they only make it available through cingular.

Why wouldn't they make it available trough
other providers? That really pi**es me off!!

I have T-Mobile and I want to stay with them.

EDIT: By the way, does Apple's site seem slow or is it
my machine when they play the iphone
quichtime movies? Ever since I got Q7
It is REALLY SLOW!

Who is Steve?

I've never heard anything but bad things about Cingular. I have T-Mobile and I have never had a problem with them in 2 years.

The fact that it's GSM & it's so lusted after means it will be unlocked in a heartbeat. Look at OS X.

The video on the site is crappy... 15fps or some <span style='color:blue' title='I&#39;m naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span>. The phone flash demos should be perfect however.

GSM is the most logical choice to develop first when building a phone in this global economy age. Really, the US and whatever other countries stupid enough not to convert over to GSM in the last several years, are the only ones hurt. But the US has a GSM carrier.

Cingular is apparently upgrading their entire network to better support the systems required to run it with the higher quality that people will expect from an Apple product. Also of note regarding an unlocked version: in the US at least, Cingular has exclusive rights for the next several years. While it's certainly possible that Apple will produce a CDMA and/or PCS version for those who don't run GSM networks, it may take a while for such a product to roll out.

If the other cell phone carriers can see the horizon they will add or convert their phone base to GSM phones quickly in the near future.

Just saw on Yahoo News that Cisco are now suing Apple over rights to the "iPhone" term...;). Looks like Cisco are out to play a little time wasting game - they were until the iPhone announcement - in negotiations to license the name to Apple.

As soon as I heard iPhone, however long ago that was, I knew I wouldn't like it. I can't see what the fuss is about. It's not asif it's bundling loads of great features into a product which replaces one or more existing items like you'd think. To me, it looks like I could selotape my phone/camera and zen vision together and it would still be smaller than the iPhone! It's like a fricking brick!

Also, I would guess screen breakage is the most common mobile phone accident. I reckon all you'd have to do is put that thing in your back pocket, forget about it (hard to do since it's MASSIVE) and then sit down. Bang, screen's cracked. All functionality out of the window, massive repair bill.

Who wants to browse the net on their PHONE! For smurf's sake, I still cannot see what this is raved about by everyone.

It looks to me like Apple have done what they always do, add loads of unneeded functionality, put smooth graphics and animations on it, put a massive price tag on it, and sell sell sell. Well, it's not for me :)

It's actually pretty small. However, if you're looking for something smaller but in the same basic style, you may want to look here. If you want to continue carrying around two or three devices, by all means do so, but I for one am completely tired of all that and welcome a single device that has great design and functionality.

The touch sensitivity is not on the surface of the display, which is hard-coated.

This statement puts you into the "I don't want a smartphone" category. :P

It's actually a pretty reasonable, competitive price tag, at least for US customers. One of the crappier existing units in the same smartphone arena will cost $419 if I go and get it right now. It may have two-thirds of the functionality.

I'm probably not in the Smartphone group either ;). Besides, I live in Ireland. I'm surrounded by monopolies who'll push the price up, charge insane "we have no competitors!" prices, and generally ensure demand over here will be limited.

Yeah, I'm a pessimist about buying anything above the level of a calculator here...:).
