Considering Outlook is rarely seen on people's machines without Word tailgating it, I'm not too surprised.

I'll just take this as another sign the Beast is dying.

Not surprised in the slightest. Publisher and Frontpage still use Word's HTML rendering engine, only Outlook was/is the only Office application to use IE rendering. This meant for office secretary's trying to send broadcast mails using HTML have "broken" emails because the HTML is incompatible between Office and Outlook.

As for Microsoft dying as a result of this.. well, that's just completely daft. This is an absolute minor and insignificant glitch compared to some of the other MS blunders, it won't even make a scratch to their sales.

Considering that most of you do not use Outlook I am not sure why it matters and Word 2007 is very different from the previous Word's as it is XML based so even if you did use Outlook I do not see this as grave.

In the corporate world I have use Outlook, Novell Groupwise, and Lotus Notes. Of the three Outlook is much better in terms of ease of use, compatibility with gadgets, and features.

I said "another sign" that they're dying. As for being completely daft, I have no defense, you're dead on. :D

Because we're programmers. It matters when something like this happens because all the sudden our scripts will be getting blamed for not working correctly. It means more testing, time and effort on our parts. On the bright side, more time means more money, someone will be billed for this.

I really need to get off the Hotmail bandwagon. I'm using that Windows Live Mail thing now, but I rarely use it anymore because I like to use my university email (with the webmail). It's based on IMP, which I'm sure some of you have heard of/used, it's quite nice (unless you're after all that AJAX stuff you get in web mail now).

EDIT | Seems Horde also have a web mail app which uses AJAX, called DIMP. Might have to try that.

Personally I'd rather use a real email client than a web based solution. Web based email clients have significant issues with character encodings due to the way web browsers render content. I use thunderbird most of the time although I like the way Apple Mail highlights related messages.

I use roundcube webmail for my domain - it's better than others I've tried.

A quick vote for the Yahoo! Mail Beta here - it's the best of the 'next-gen' webmail solutions (gMail, Live, Yahoo!) IMO.

However, hasn't this situation come about because MS have had to remove IE from Vista (or make it removable) for anti-trust reasons?

Why would that be? Does outlook need IE to run?

It would do if it needed the IE rendering engine..

What happens if a person has outlook but not microsoft office (with word)?
This is absolutely ridiculous.

Personally, it won't effect me. I send out simple HTML emails, and use thunderbird for personal use.

But, it must be a nightmare for some sites that send out nice html emails.

You can only get outlook (not outlook express) with word.
