I bought a cybershot w100 almost a year ago and have been fairly happy with it. Great battery life (600-800 photos, half with flash)! It's smaller brothers are in your price range: the w30 and w50 might be worth looking at.
The gf worked at a camera store for a while (she's a camera nut) and always tells me how much better Canon is. But whatever, I like the Sony just fine. Also I have a PSP so I didn't need to buy a second big memory stick duo.
Just looked at the w50. Looks ok (£125), although I'm not sure about the memory stick... I've never had anything that uses memory sticks. Are they slower than SD as well as being larger? I can google this actually
From my experience (without any scientific timing equipment) both memory sticks and SD cards are quite similar in speed. For the most part, the cards of all types are fairly competitive in the speed department. It's the storage size versus physical size vs pricing that's the real fight between them a lot.
feyd's right, but SD are dirt cheap now and getting cheaper whereas the memory sticks probably won't become cheaper as fast as SD. You can get 1gb SD cards for under £15 now, for the same size memory stick I think it's more than double that.

Yeah I think XD cards are about 2x the price of SD too. I have a TransFlash card (about the size of my little fingernail) which came with an adapter to allow it to be used as SD too (i.e. an SD card casing with a slot to put the TransFlash in).
Oddly enough, I just asked my brother what experience he's had with digital cameras and he's currently got a Casio in the £300 mark which he thinks is better than his last canon one. I always though Casio stuff was pretty crap apart from Calculators
Well, the S[x]0 (S60, S70...) are the smallest cameras from Canon which are considered High-End cameras, but it's way too big to dance with
The SD series is exactly what you need if you can afford about $500 for a camera. It's super small (you have to see it on real, not in the pictures - it doesn't look small in the pictures at all) and the pictures it produces are in a very high quality. Oh... and it works with SD cards. I really think this would be the camera for you
By the way... You bought her a £250 ($490) camera??? Sorry... I have to ask: why?
I have been very happy with my Olympus 710 which I purchased for about $320, IIRC. Very small design, weather proof, action/low light/bright light settings, holds tons of pics on a 1Gb stick. Bought 1 spare battery and always keep a spare charged in the case, never have had problems with that. For $100 bought an underwater case for it which allows for manipulation of all controls. Just got back from the Bahamas where I took it down waterslide, into the ocean, etc.
