I would like to learn how to make 3D Models and Animations and stuff.
What programs would you folks recommend?

Maya, Lightwave, and SoftImage.
Some like 3DS Max.
Of the free ones, I've seen Blender noted several times.

Lightwave here. But as if php wasn't time consuming enough. The list goes on and on and on and on,.....

Blender 3D is one of the popular free ones. I've used it for years and besides a sometimes unintuitive interface it's quite good. Depending on what type of modelling you have in mind, for Windows you can get various more specialised apps for landscaping, character modelling, etc. Many provide the last version (before current) free of charge.

I used Terragen for landscape moddeling.

Yeah I used that too, good fun that. Bryce is a commercial alternative that a lot of people swear by

If you're planning on modelling people then poser is the best tool for that job.

I do not know what I want to model, yet. I started looking for this kind of software on a whim and I will probably use it on a whim, too.
Since I do not know what I want to do, I figure that I should choose the most well-rounded software.
