Linux homepage

Post by matthijs »

Ok, I'm going to ask a really silly question.

Is this the official Linux website?

It seems to be. But I ask because if you look at the site it just doesn't look like the website for the most widely used (?) open source platform on the net. It looks more like a homepage made by my nephew with Frontpage.

Shouldn't Linux have a beautiful and great website? So that if someone/a company is interested in Linux and visits the site doesn't turn around immediately because it just doesn't look professional?

Just wondering ... :)

i have to say i agree, especially when you consider that *nix is primarily a niché market for the tech savvy, you would expect them to have a very impressive web-site

just look at Microsoft's site, very polished andvery profession, same with apple's[/url]

Well that explains a bit. But even then. Linux.org, THE domain name for one of the most well known server platforms.

I know there are like 200 different distro's of Linux out there, with as many different websites. Some of them are probably very professional looking. But still...

Maybe I should contact them and ask if they need any help with the site? :)

whitehouse.org also isn't a government web site. "Linux" by its very nature has no centralization.

Thanks for the link Jenk. Must admit that site has a high geek-level as well :)

I must confess I haven't done anything with Linux myself (I mean installing it) yet, but I'd like to as soon as I find some time. So I just wanted to check out "the Linux site" to see what general info I could find. Of course I was aware of the decentralized aspect of Linux with all distros etc., but I figured there would be at least some central, independent website with general information for the wider - even non-tech - audience.
