If you say alound .gif... do you pronounce it as 'jiff' or 'giff'? Somewhere years ago I heard the correct pronunciation was 'jiff'... so that is what I've been saying for years. Who's with me?

I usually use the hard "g" because .jiff is another image format. :)

Just to give these people a taste of their own medicine... I've started pronouncing "JPEG" with a hard G.

I say jif, however i do not think it matters because people know what you are saying. It is like SQL (See-Kwul or S-Q-L)

*Gasp* You mean SQL isn't only pronounced as an acronym? I was always wondering what that kid at work was saying.. I'd just nod and walk off.

And here I was saying "grr" instead of "gres." Wiki has taught me a lesson.

I always used the hard G, but years ago in my big bad multimedia school, my instructor informed us that the correct pronunciation was with a 'j' sound. Even though he also used a hard 'g'.

I'm still trying to pronounce Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg.
A lake in Webster Massachusetts. If I succeed I wonder if I can make money with my accomplishments.

Tim Berners-Lee says anyone who pronounces .gif with a hard G is just plain an idiot. He made this statement years ago, so there may have been an apology in recent years I do not know about.

This is great! I think I'll make up acronyms and mess with the pronunciation just to mess with people. My first acronym is, drum roll please:

S.O.M.A.A.D.L.

Which stands for:

Sit On My @ass All Day Long

And because I created it, I am going to pronounce it:

'soma' 'aye' 'dee' 'el'

Forcing everyone to pronounce that extra 'a' character instead of lazily meshing it into one sound like:

'soma' 'dee' 'el'

please stay tuned for more!
