Erratic Firewall

I often have to access my home machine from remote terminals that are behind a district firewall. And I must say, it's a strange firewall. They recently revamped it: previously it didn't block any HTTPS connections and allowed LogMeIn (quite useful tool, although I usually use VNC with an SSH tunnel). With the new firewall, the sysadmins wisened up and blocked LogMeIn, but there's something interesting about the blockage: it's not always in effect! More times than not, you can access logmein.com for approximately 15 minutes, and then you lose connection because the firewall magically kicked in.

I am at loss to explain why. Any answers?

Might not be the site itself, i'm speaking from experience with Smoothwall with the newest Snort and Active Firewall mods. Sometimes I'd get locked out of the safest sites, say mircosoft.com, not because of the content but because of the requests sent BACK to my machine passing tho the firewall. I can't really explain it throughly but I've had this issue with safe sites... i had to remove the Active Firewall mod to stop the random blocking.
