Penny Arcade knows how to capture what Vista is all about. Especially the last panel? Do you really want to give your computer that? ;)

~AKAPJ: Yeah, Microsoft has me tied in because of gaming too, but I still look at it the same. If you like Mario games so bad you could say Nintendo is wrong because they're the only company in the market offering Mario games. So hey, if you wanna play Mario, buy a Nintendo, if not, don't buy one!

Obviously I do think it would be nice if Microsoft would release DirectX for other OS's; but it's never going to happen, and if I was in their shoes, I wouldn't release it either. Would you?

I found the going price for Vista Home Premium is around €290-€330. One store was selling the Upgrade package for €213. Since I like stores with reasonably fair pricing, I'll mention it was HMV on Grafton Street, Dublin. I have no intention of buying until I check around some more - the price variance between stores is insane.

I think most of the "hate" for MS over DX is because they created DX with the sole intent of cornering the gaming market. DX originally started out as just a rival to OpenGL. I can't remember specifically, but I don't think it was restricted as much as it is today. It was certainly a HECK of a lot easier to get the tech-specs of DX than it is today.

The OpenGL group are working on equalling the abilities of DX10, but it's currently the usual story of an open source dev team vs. a closed source (and highly paid) dev team. The highly paid will be working on nothing but DX, whilst OpenGL is a "spare time" project, along with the other obstacles having an Open Source community can bring (timezones, for example.) Transgaming and WineHQ are also hitting a brick wall as far as emulating DX10 is concerned, but they are both slowly gaining ground.
