If it triggers the activation thing, then the chances are fairly high that they wont let you re-activate...

One of the big things are Driver Licenses for things like video cards, sound cards, etc...

If they are not on the Windows Vista Approved list then Microsoft can shutdown your computer or limit accessability. Remember the 3rd Party drivers for ATI that fixed certain problems with the Catalyst drivers from ATI? You wouldn't be able to use them unless Microsoft authorised the use. If you did then Vista might limit what the computer can do or shut it down completely.

Basically Microsoft will control all driver content under Vista.

Welcome to the world of the OS Big Brother brought to you by Microsoft. :D

What do you mean by first hand? From my understanding you can move your OS over as much as you want (provided you remove it from the old system) and upgrade all you want. Did MS change their stance again?

Everyone has been warned about Vista but sadly the people making the warnings were thought to be crackpots. Sigh...
I do believe that in 2 years from now everyone will be on Vista, there will not be a mass exodus to Linux and Mac, and those making all the warnings will have moved on giving warnings about the next version of Windows.

Seems to me like they were seeing just how much people would tolerate and were prepared to make changes.

I didn't even read the blog yet because I got the word straight from Customer Support. It is tied to this computer's hardware configuration and I CAN NOT move it. I.E. if I uninstall vista and re-install a new copy of vista that other copy of vista is just wasted. Period.

Just wait until people start complaining about Vista shutting down or going into Minimal Mode when they try installing new hardware drivers that are not WHQ Certified by Microsoft.
There goes quite a bit ;). Even Nvidia must make do with a beta for Vista...

As for the lock-in. Far as I know it's in conflict in Ireland since we have a Fair Use right enshrined in Copyright Law. Besides, my XP mysteriously managed to reactivate continuously without needing to phone support across four major upgrades (MB/Proc/Video/SB). I agree it's stupid - can't Customer Support offer some option?
