a programming/designing thread of sorts
theres a couple of things ive wondered since ive been here....so i couldnt very well sum it up into one theme but just to start...why is the majority(if not all) of us here so anti-flash? not saying that flash is some all powerful web design tool...because seeing what some of you guys can accomplish...looking at some of the solutions provided by numorous moddies...this forum is full of plenty skill...i e the php throwdown project was awsome....i gotta get to that level of genius
also...how does one create games from php...this is really new to me...also...feyd you said that you used to design video games...what program would you suggest if i told you i wanted to make a video game like warcraft 3 with its cenematics or gameplay?
this is a thread with no particular theme....just a series of questions that ive had...so post on, ask on, and please stay away from questions that can get the thread smurfslapped by our moddies and locked
thanks

Regarding anti-flash:
I don't think anyone is 100% anti-flash. But I do think everyone is 100% anti-100%-flash sites. Reasons include browser incompatibilities (Lynx/Links, and small-device browsers such as GPRS handsets) and the added weight flash brings (the end result is usually a lot more bandwidth consumption, and load times.. some users, myself included, get bored waiting for sites that take more than say 5 seconds to load.)
If flash is used (to what some agree is) appropriately, I personally don't have any problem with it at all. It can achieve what raw (X)HTML can't, in the form of video, audio etc.
If you want to make a 3D game, you are looking at extensive use of C/C++ and/or Python for the engine, and tools such as 3DS MAX for the modelling.

C/C++ or Python is used for the movement purposes? im embarrrased to say i honestly didnt know that...ive been wanting to get into game design for some time but i dont quite get the conceptJenk wrote:If you want to make a 3D game, you are looking at extensive use of C/C++ and/or Python for the engine, and tools such as 3DS MAX for the modelling.
but one cant help to wonder or say to themselves when they purchase a game, "i can do this!" sure its prolly difficult and tedious as all hell but id love to give it a go...with a good story line for your cinimatic and charecters one could make some serious cash...or just flat out have fun

3DS Max, Maya, or Bryce 3D for models, Photoshop or a similar program for textures, extensive C/C++ and/or Python, LUA, and I've even seen Assembly language used in older games.
Chances are that if you did start making a game like Warcraft 3, that you would never finish. I tried to write a top-down RPG once and let me tell you that it's alll a lot harder than it seems. It's a whole nother ball-game.

I'll take on your flash question. The others are for people more into programming than I am
.
The other day I went to Yahoo in IE6 and it crashes, saying that the site I was trying to visit was trying to use a Plug In that was incompatible with my browser (I guess there is a newer version of the flash player now or something) and as it tried to offer me the option of installing the plug in, it just died. Flat out died. So after many trials getting IE to work right after that, I disabled plug ins. That means that any site I visit with IE will not work if it is 100% Flash. In fact, if any parts of the site are important and are in Flash, I am SOL.
Another example... yesterday I was searching and came across a Web Development web site. This site was 100% Flash, but in like 5 different Flash movies. It took almost 10 seconds for 3 of the five movies to load. Sorry, as a user, I don't have that kind of time. As a client, I wouldn't accept that standard.
That being said, I am all for the use of Flash as necessary, in a minimalistic use case and for things that are not critical to operation and success of the presentation of the content on the page.

Afaik it's a proprietary "standard". And imho there is no place for these belong on the "World Wide Web"...Obadiah wrote:theres a couple of things ive wondered since ive been here....so i couldnt very well sum it up into one theme but just to start...why is the majority(if not all) of us here so anti-flash?

Besides the compatibility and proprietary arguments against Flash there is a selfish one too. Flash allows artists to program ... and I think it rubs programmers the wrong way that artists can, for a range of applications, create programs that are much better than programmers can. The incredible thing about Flash is not the runtime -- it's the IDE.

i agree there also....alot of flash sites these days are a bit over the top...even though their definate eye candy....5 minutes of loading time is excrusiating(i so butchered that wordEverah wrote:I'll take on your flash question. The others are for people more into programming than I am.

Here is where i can agree...i absolutely refuse to use programs like frontpage, and dreamweaver for the simple fact that it tells people that they have to know nothing to do what we do....and damnit thats not true at all....how can you expect to get better without knowing the basics...what happens when theres a small thing your wanting to change but since you dont know html and css...your crap out of luck because the program has done it for you...we programmers get too little credit for what we do only because our creations arent as flashy but the time spent and the quality of the work is so much more than what the so called "Graphic Artists" care to do or spendarborint wrote:Besides the compatibility and proprietary arguments against Flash there is a selfish one too. sadly thats the modern workplace...as a programmer working for the company i work for...my boss and super goes to differen competitors sites some of which are loaded with flash and their like....why cant we...i tell them quality over quanity...but the argument goes slightly in favor of the flash site because of the eye candy

Only geeks care about the actual markup... Real users only care about the 'visuals and sounds'...
(Anyway, i've decided not to develop for that target audience, so i don't really care about their preferences
