Unicycles

Post by pickle »

A colleague of mine is selling his unicycle & I've been considering buying one for a while - seems like the perfect opportunity.

Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with unicycles? Would you recommend it? Is it easy to learn how to ride?

I tried riding one as a kid and failed miserably.

might be fun to try again now that I'm matured (only physically though) 8O

I rode one as a kid too. It wasn't a strict unicycle though - it had a balance wheel right close to the main wheel. It only took me a couple days to learn it though.

I think they are cool. And one advantage: you'll probably get surprised looks instead of angry ones when you take it on a busy train.

Have you ever tried to balance a grapefruit on a vertical chopstick that has a wheel on the bottom of it? That is Everah on a unicycle. Not likely that anyone will ever see that.

The only trains I have out here are freight trains. I can pretty much guarantee I'd get a surprised look no matter what I had with me ;)

8O If you buy a unicycle, you MUST post some video. Unicycles are halarious! Would you ride it to work? How about to dinner or something with a lady? Are there unicycle side-cars?

Unicycling rocks! :) Quite some time ago I've done it though. Below are some pictures of me, taken a few years ago.

This little hill is way steeper than it looks on screen! I never made it safe to the bottom. Wheel kept on slipping through.

A few tips for beginners.
1. Always bend forward enough or you will lose balance.
2. Move your arms. Just make random wild gestures. It helps searching your balance. As an added benefit it will make you look ridiculous too.
3. Keep trying for hours and days. It will take time but once you can do it, you can do it forever, just like riding an ordinary bike.

Heh. Ya, I'll post some video. I'm primarily planning on riding it to work actually. I'm about 2 blocks from where I work & it's too much of a hassle to pull my big mountain bike through my 2 front doors. A unicycle would be much easier.

Thanks for the pointers - I'll be sure to practice in the middle of an empty parking lot so I don't cream anyone.

I once saw a unicycle that had two wheels (so I guess it wasn't a unicycle), but they were resting one on top of the other. I guess for people who ride unicycles it is very difficult to ride because everything is backwards in terms of which direction to push on the pedals.

anyone else seen this gizmo?

edit: just found this

one thing I've found is that if you ride a unicycle, you have to wear a hat like this:

edit: stupid image tag didn't work

Selling his unicycle :!:

Taking a ride on his unicycle :dubious:

I thought that this would be an inappropriate topic on this forum.
I would get a punch in the face if I asked someone if they wanted to ride my unicycle!
