I tried to connect to any IRC server but it says [ Blocked by ZoneAlarm Security ]. So I went to Program Control and allowed everything that was possible. Still got the same result. What else should I unblock ? Thank you in advance.

It's surprising how much Google knows.

It also blocks Subversion and a few other applications regardless of the settings you use from its control panel. I think it might be ZoneAlarm fiddling with HTTP requests and responses as it passes through the firewall. I know for example that it adds some funky javascript function to incoming HTML which is bad enough.

You can set program controls all you want, but unless you specify a range of ports to allow, it is always going to block those ports.

Your mIRC isn't working because I'm sure it is blocking whatever port it uses. Look up 'mIRC port' in google and configure ZoneAlarm to allow traffic through that port.

Same with subversion... and other HTTP protocols for that matter (3306 I believe?)... u must open the TCP/IP ports for the trusted network for unobstructed application allowance.

I have found that the newer versions of ZoneAlarm try to do too much. It's starting to get more like Nortons Internet Security package and that is a total mess.

Older versions of ZoneAlarm do a much better job in my mind. They are strictly firewalls and don't try to do anything extra, unlike the latest versions.

I have been using ZoneAlarm 4.5.538.1 on Windows XP SP2 with all of the latest updates after SP2 forever and it blocks everything and gives me the program control I need without all of the extra junk they have been adding to ZA.

The above link is to that version of ZA. In all of the time I have used it NOTHING has been able to sneak in or out that I don't specifically want. Sadly, some great programs start to get bad due to feature creep.

It works great with IRC and everything else. Just because a company releases a newer version doesn't mean its better. :D

Hmm... that's strange. Running 6.5.737.000 with no such problems. Had to do a lot of twiddling to get my webserver readable to the outside though.

AKA.... I'll agree with you that Norton is a mess, but the new ZoneAlarm Security Suite is a godsend. I used to use Norton's Suite and absolutely hated it. Then a little over a year ago I switched over to ZA Suite and haven't had a single problem yet. I'm running WAMP on it as well... no issues.

Oh... and if any of you are looking for THE BEST spyware software out there... it is without a doubt Spyware Doctor. I've been using them for over 2 years now and can honestly say they pickup stuff that all the others completely miss... and I ain't talking bout cookies either. It has picked up numerous backdoors, keyloggers and dialers... all that I myself inspected to make sure they were not just a false alarm. Indeed I had picked them up somewhere.. and I am extremely careful where I go on the internet. I also make all my emails ASCII text.. Just a recommendation.

Oh... and Norton never picked up a single thing. Even if all I had was Norton installed on one of my machines... I'd probably just turn it off and use nothing instead. It simply won't pick up anything.
