Any designers going to spend their money on CS3

Post by matthijs »

So, with the prices being leaked today of Adobe's CS3 package, are there many people going to spend the $1599 for Creative Suite CS3 Web Premium, $2499 for Adobe Creative Suite CS3 Master Collection, $1199 for Creative Suite CS3 Production Premium, or $1599 for Suite CS3 Design Premium?

Or am I the only one here who thinks that's not an amount you spend just like that :)

I'm pretty happy with the previous versions, I've grown quite comfortable with them.. until the prices drop a little I wouldn't consider buying it..

Then again I try to never buy things as they released.. save a bundle.

Yes :) I used the Beta and thought it was brilliant. It's pretty much a "must" if you have an Intel mac since the PPC versions run in rosetta and are prone to crashing or just running slowly.

EDIT | I'm not gonna rush out and buy it. Not for another 18 months or so... saving my money for traveling right now.

$2500 isn't unreasonable.

How come they have released a BETA and all kinds of information regarding all the new updates and features for Photoshop CS3, but we have seen absolutely nothing on Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, Premiere Pro, After Effects, etc.... and they want us now to upgrade without knowing what the deal is with all the other apps? I don't get adobe. And I HATE their website.

Personally, I won't buy it. But if my company buys it for me, I wouldn't tell them no.

The Photoshop guru's say they absolutely hate the new 'shrunken' pallete system CS3 implemented. I myself have seen the video tutorial for it and it looked bizarre. However, I really like the idea of using the RAW processing on JPEG images... how awesome is that.

I found a rather major bug (at least I think so) with Illustrator CS2, and am thinking about contacting Adobe about it to let them know and see if I can get a free upgrade to CS3. Do you think it's worth my time? Any tips on how I should ask politely (or unpolitely) for a free upgrade to CS3? This bug I found really put a dent in my work and had me pulling my hair out for weeks. Now I can't do what I want with the software because of some crazy bug.

I don't really agree that the bug you had in Illustrator was "major," but everyone's mileage will vary.

I doubt they would give you a free upgrade to CS3.

A client of mine is buying the upgrade this week, I would wait personally.

He's called both Adobe and Microsoft bitching about software problems in the past, it almost always results in a free new version. I say go for it!

Seriously, what's the worst that could happen? They could say no, then you are literally in no different a position than you are now.

Considering my weak design skills I think I'll just wait a little bit.

I'm still on PS6, and it's what my designer uses as his primary software (he does have CS2 but doesn't use it). It's so much faster and can do everything you need. It's a bargain too.

I really enjoy some of the more recent PS features like layer nesting and smart objects - if CS3 introduces more useful features like those (with a speed increase) I'll be more than happy to upgrade.

As a photographer, the convert-to-b&w adjustment layer is a godsend, and the filters-as-adjustments feature is awesome.
I'm not sure it would be as much of a difference for a designer.

I, for one, will get it.

I won't personally buy it - too expensive. However, I'm going to beg, plead & demand (politely) that my boss buys it for me at work. I've been waiting for Smart Filters for years - I'll be damned if I'm not going to have them now that they're available.
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.
