Strange PC Problem

I got a M2NPV-MX {asus} mobo here with a amd 64 bit processor.
It's got 2gig ram installed and has both IDE and SATA connectors.

Mobo: Works, upgraded BIOS to latest Version
CPU: Works. correct fan + heat sink
RAM: All OK

But still it doesn't detect any of my IDE Harddisks...
I can attach a DVDROM which works fine,
checked the jumpers, switched to cable select etc.. all settings are ok,
but it still halts for a LONG time after checking the RAM

(also disabled sata in the bios)
- anyone has an idea?

Have you tried installing a hard drive on IDE2 to verify it's not the controller on IDE1?

Yes, attached it to IDE2 too, still the same problem

I had this happen to me a long time ago, if I remember correctly, something I thought was correct actually wasn't.

Double check your jumpers and the position on the cable. I'm betting the diagram on the HD shows a mirror image of the jumpers, so you may think they are correct but they are backwards.

Is there (enough) power going to the drive? There are often two cable select settings. Have you verified the jumper settings for cable select are the correct one (for you bios)?

Yes,
Double checked everything. Took everything apart, put it back together,
still no luck.

Who are the IDE hard drive manufacturer(s)?

What settings do you have in BIOS?

- 1x Maxtor 120GB
- 1x Seagate 250GB

BIOS:
Disabled SATA [is autom enabled when sata inserver]
Power settings: Correct
SATA spectrum: Disabled
IDE1 & 2: Autodetect

HDD:
Tried cable select, attached only one HDD, ide 2 etc..

As soon as I attach an HDD it hangs for a long time after the ram check and before the ide/sata check.

I just called the store and I'm going to return it.
They also gave me a Power supply with NO sata connectors, so I had to take another one "out of my stack".
Djeezes,
This is the first time I don't check my hardware before collecting it and they try to +$£" me over.

How many IDE connections does your motherboard indicate exist?

My SATA drives are listed as IDE drives on my Asus board.
