Currently, our soldiers do all the time.

All those offered so far, excluding maybe onion's, wouldn't survive a day at the beach unless you were really really careful.

and since mobile data service in Canada sucks worse than Rwanda it's nice to have a phone with wifi! I even have Putty on this thing ;-)

Dude, how do you put Putty on a phone? And have you actually been able to connect to servers with it?

With a bluetooth keyboard.
Exactly. UMPC + portable keyboard.

I have to say: Interesting choice, but I'd rather go for something with more features than something durable, though for use "on the beach", yeah, good choice...
EDIT: If you're looking for connectivity, I'd actually suggest this:

HTC Shift. Built in keyboard (fairly nice size, may take some getting used to though), built in 3G broadband wireless, plus it comes with Vista. Haven't looked at the price yet, chances are that it's fairly high...

@everah: it was compiled for the Symbian series 60 OS, which my phone runs 8) It connects either over mobile data or wifi (your choice) and it works very well!

It actually saved me a long trip home one day when a client's web server went wonky - I logged in, modified some symbolic links, edited a few files and I continued my downtown shenanigans!

The querty keyboard makes all the difference.
