Dell Open Source Notebooks

Post by orlandinho »

i am looking the posibility of buying a Dell notebook, i found an open-source notebook dell is offering, it just comes with FreeDOS,
and it's cheaper than notebooks coming with windows installed
i prefer it comes without windows because i want to install linux and XP by myself

have any of you bought this notebook or have worked with them?

I would recommend buying one of their system with Linux installed. The reviews I have read say the things just work out of the box.

If I could afford a new laptop right now, one of the Dells with Linux preinstalled would be the way I'd go.

Aggghh...

Never buy a laptop with pre-installed anything...who cares about out-of-the-box...your a geek...it's less headache to setup everything yourself then have to remove non-essential crap...even if it is open source...I'm willing to bet there is garbage on there you don't need...

I'll *never* buy a laptop with anything installed again...

End of rant :P

Actually, they have received quite a few complaints about this, and now allow end users to opt out of value added software bundles. Google toolbar and Norton Antivirus are still installed.

An advantage of having linux pre-installed would be that everything works out of the box. No messing around finding the right drivers for wireless, graphic card, dvd-writer etc. I would be very interested to hear about the experiences of people with these laptops.

i am thinking of buying a dell notebook with linux preinstalled,
in my case because i dont live in USA, a relative is going for some days and he's gonna bring me the notebook
with linux preintalled i assure there would not be any problem when installing drivers or with any component of the notebook

and i haven´t found any comment about dell notebooks comming with FreeDOS
