Hehe, now I'm reminded of the day that MySpace dropped tables (on the main profile page). The day they added new graphics, they got rid of the tables. Apparently, the developers are trying harder now that they're becoming better at programming. I'm sure they'd do the same for profiles, but it would break everyone's "custom styles."

Tables are for tabular data. Always have been. Just because developers/designers were "forced" to use them to make a page look the way they wanted does not mean that the intended purposes of tables was for layout.

That would be like me saying that, even though we have back scratchers now that are used to scratch your back, since tree branches could be used to scratch my back in the past, tree branches were made to scratch backs. That is nonsense. Tables were never meant to be a layout device for entire page designs. Maybe for tabular data, but not for entire designs.

If it is the only thing you have at the time then that is what it is designed to do. As with anything things improve over time.

A better analogy would be Tables are like tubes. They were used to build complex electronic devices that were large and cumbersome but got the job done.

With the invention of CSS2 or the creation of transistors electronic devices could be made smaller and faster and more efficient.

Back on CNN...

Check out the CNNN Blog on the new site. People posting overwhelmingly hate the new layout. There are many complainet about how they removed links to many sections and basically dumbed down the site.

CNN probably wasn't thinking to redo the site in terms of usability, but just to "be modernized." Designers tend to do that a lot where they like to redesign for the hell of redesigning.

If you make changes without some purpose for them in the larger scheme of things, it's a pointless change (although, a contributor to this could just be that the website is plain ugly).
