OpenID For PHP 0.1.0 Preview available

Post by Maugrim_The_Reaper »

I've been absent for a few weeks now (I migrated south to Barcelona for a few weeks to escape the rain!) on vacation, and since it's Summer I do a spot of sightseeing. This year it was Barcelona for a few weeks, armed with a dodgy Pentium 4 laptop I have been dragging around for years. So I got some development done in between enjoying the local food and, of course, the local Irish pubs. You can't go anywhere in Europe without stumbling across an Irish pub somewhere! Those wondering where I disappeared to (only my blog saw any real attention) will hear from me soon - I spent a bit more time away than planned.

In the meantime, I'm pleased to announce the release of a preview version of the OpenID For PHP Library (snazzy name outstanding). You can grab your copy for review from subversion at:

http://svn.astrumfutura.org/pear/trunk/

All four directories are required to be added to your include_path; as the name suggests these are setup to become PEAR packages. The proposals are all up on PEAR by now ;). Joining the growing number of uber Devnetwork members who maintain totally cool libraries we cannot survive without, OpenID For PHP is a PHP5 library for enabling OpenID Authentication in web applications. If you haven't the foggiest what OpenID is, visit the OpenID Foundations site at http://www.openid.net. Relevant posts about this preview are available from my blog - http://blog.astrumfutura.com - also.

The website for the library will turn up at http://www.openid.org, at present there's a monochrome one-pager I did very quickly just to placehold the domain. The site also mentions a mailing list for those wishing to get in contact with the development team (i.e. me).

Documentation will turn up shortly, along with an alpha release and standalone downloads. My blog has an example usage posted from a few days ago to get you started.

Hope this finds everyone well! :)

Very Yiddish. I like.

Looks very interesting. Great work.

One thing that keeps bothering me though, is how openId prevents identity theft. I visit somebadsite.com, which looks thrustworthy to me. The site asks me to sign in with my openId and links to someotherbadsite.com which asks to fill in my openId username and password. And bam, my sole account for many many websites has been stolen...?
