I am planning to go to this conference . At $650 it is very expensive in IMHO +(hotel + car+flight). It will be almost 2000 total. Had anyone being to one? Any comments about it. The other reason I want to go is to check out the city. I will be looking for PHP jobs there.
Any advise????

Depends. Are you a freelancer/private contractor?
I'd definetly go and write everything off as a business expense. If your employed with a company, ask them to flip part of the bill?
If I had time I'd totally check out a conference, preferably in Winter though when the confereance was somewhere warm. Make a paid vacation out of it.

anyone from atlanta
I also wanted to see if I liked the city. I am looking to move back to the states. I have a house in Virginia but my wife wanted something warmer. Anyone from Georgia here??
If I hear that the convention is a total waste of time , then paying all that money makes no sense.

Re: anyone from atlanta
I've flown through there, and my g/f is originally from WV, and used to travel a lot for her old job. From what I understand, Georgia is hot and humid. Now let me reiterate, it's HOT and HUMID. Like, 95% humidity and 100+ degrees. Flying in to Atlanta sucked, they have the worst air of any airport I've flown through (though that's a short list: Reno, Sacramento, Las Vegas, SFO, Atlanta, and... crap... some place in Virginia). Now maybe that was just the last couple days I was there, but that place was miserable to me. I much prefer my 105 degrees at 20%.yacahuma wrote:I also wanted to see if I liked the city. Unfortunately...
Well unfortunately I am a one man show. I am a consultant and will have to pay everything out of my own pocket.

I'm guessing the conference is in Atlanta, and if so...
I lived there for 15 years and I loved it. The city is great and is at an altitude of about 1000 ft above sea level so the summer is much more moderate than the savannah part of the state. Winters are a bit chilly snow storms are not unheard of and ice storms are somewhat common. But Atlanta itself is absolutely a fabulous place to live.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1. Except maybe Silicon Valley.ReverendDexter wrote:/me starts dumping salt and pepper on himself... then stops as he realizes that would mean he'd have to move to the Bay... ugh.Everah wrote: In the Bay Area, there are lots of openings, full time and contract, for seasoned PHP developers.
I'd go the book route. Get a membership online to oreilly books online... http://safari.oreilly.com/ Lots of books to choose from.
