I am planning to go to this conference . At $650 it is very expensive in IMHO +(hotel + car+flight). It will be almost 2000 total. Had anyone being to one? Any comments about it. The other reason I want to go is to check out the city. I will be looking for PHP jobs there.

Any advise????

Depends. Are you a freelancer/private contractor?

I'd definetly go and write everything off as a business expense. If your employed with a company, ask them to flip part of the bill?

If I had time I'd totally check out a conference, preferably in Winter though when the confereance was somewhere warm. Make a paid vacation out of it. :)

What would $2,000 worth of books do for you?

Ummm a lot? I probably have $20,000 in books, but where did books come from?

Aren't we talking about a convention? :P

I wasn't asking you. I was making a point.

Choice 1: $2000 conference
Choice 2: $2000 worth of books

What would you learn more from?

anyone from atlanta

I also wanted to see if I liked the city. I am looking to move back to the states. I have a house in Virginia but my wife wanted something warmer. Anyone from Georgia here??

If I hear that the convention is a total waste of time , then paying all that money makes no sense.

I've flown through there, and my g/f is originally from WV, and used to travel a lot for her old job. From what I understand, Georgia is hot and humid. Now let me reiterate, it's HOT and HUMID. Like, 95% humidity and 100+ degrees. Flying in to Atlanta sucked, they have the worst air of any airport I've flown through (though that's a short list: Reno, Sacramento, Las Vegas, SFO, Atlanta, and... crap... some place in Virginia). Now maybe that was just the last couple days I was there, but that place was miserable to me. I much prefer my 105 degrees at 20%.

Oh I see...

Well obviously choice #2. But travel is fun and so are vacations. Especially when someone else pays for it. :)

Unfortunately...

Well unfortunately I am a one man show. I am a consultant and will have to pay everything out of my own pocket.

I'm guessing the conference is in Atlanta, and if so...
I lived there for 15 years and I loved it. The city is great and is at an altitude of about 1000 ft above sea level so the summer is much more moderate than the savannah part of the state. Winters are a bit chilly snow storms are not unheard of and ice storms are somewhat common. But Atlanta itself is absolutely a fabulous place to live.

Thank you

Monster sends me an agent every day that has listings for PHP developers three to four days a week in the listsings. In the Bay Area, there are lots of openings, full time and contract, for seasoned PHP developers.

/me starts dumping salt and pepper on himself... then stops as he realizes that would mean he'd have to move to the Bay... ugh.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1. Except maybe Silicon Valley.
