What are you referring to? We do not have ads.

Are you joking? Because there definately are ads, below the topic title, and a Google Search up the top...

Maybe on the subSilver theme, but certainly not on the Sherbet theme, yet.

We're making some changes, which will most likely include shifting hosts. Hosting will no longer be donated (most likely.) We will need to pay for it some how. We're still discussing everything.

Well in your discussions, think about a donation box or something, I'll throw PHPDN a few dollars if I can afford it, if it needs the money in the future.

That's pretty much like donated hosting - which feyd said will not be the situation anymore :P

Here are the ads by the way: http://www.dynamized.com/phpdn-ads.png

Well I definitely wouldn't put them there. Right at the top. How much is hosting going to cost per year? I can throw in some money. I'm sure there is someone, somewhere with an extra server they could donate for this.

We don't know how much it will cost yet as we're still discussing everything.

Is donated hosting with a contract stipulating complete control explicitly ruled out?

I don't believe we've ruled any one thing out as yet.

Let us know on what you guys decide to do with any profits. if it's to expand the site, pay the mods some meager change and things along those lines count me in! I've always wanted a way to contribute yet still be stingy ;)

It's me just exploring different options with different goals in mind. So far the reaction has been negative as far as the placement goes. Personally, I've found targeted google ads to be helpful on many occasions; however, in this case, the placement of the ads seems to have the unintended result of being too close to other links commonly used.

This is far from a permanent fixture, and is just something we are exploring at the moment. The end goal is to add some new features to the site, some of which require money.

As for donations, I've never been keen on asking for donations. Not ruling it out, but it creates too many headaches I really don't want to deal with.

Donated hardware becomes an issue because you usually need rack space located somewhere, and that costs even more than normal hosting.

And of course, I have absolutely no desire to be required to exchange advertising for hosting (which might seem odd, considering the addition of ads, but the difference in my mind is simple: Being hosted by someone who requires that you advertise for them puts you at odds with the truth. ImHosted at least provides hosting without any requirement of advertising. If someone wants to host us for free, the expectation is that we are just like a paying customer, except we don't pay anything. Most people don't like that deal).

Anyways, the end goal is to enhance the site. I really do believe targeted advertising is actually useful. For example, a forum topic covering PHP and XML classes might have ads for PHP/XML software that is available. Or questions about PHP5 might include links to PHP5 hosts. Or PHP editors, or even support for MySQL, etc.

Besides, the assumption here is if you are using something like an Ad blocker, you won't see the stuff anyways (i.e. people who don't want to see it won't see it anyways).

However, as mentioned, people don't like the positioning. Frankly, it there just because it fit. I'll be moving it to another location with the attempt to be useful for those who want to see it as well as out of the way for those that don't want to deal with it.

That being said, I also added the google search, which works on the same basic system, but I think you'll find that handy right off the bat. Let me know if you like the search.

The key word here is "required." I'm not required to link back to them.
